112/150 questions

Posted by: Jaybar on 23 August 2002

Can one stack them on the top shelf of a rack w/o sonic detriment?

Which might be better in driving my SF Signums?

1)112/150
2) Nait5/Flatcap2.

I would be using Ikemi CD Player and Linn TT with Linto/Lingo.

Thanks,

Jay

Stacking components kind of defeats the object of having them in separate boxes.

Having a power amp to close to a revealing preamp will only serve to bugger up those sensitive signals coming from the source component to the preamp.

A raised noise floor will be the result as the pre will pick up the hum from the transformer in the power amp.

Using a Linn Ikemi will only make matters worse given the nature of its power supply when used outside of an all-Linn system.

One of the benefits I enjoy from using a decent rack with the source and pre on the top two shelves, a spacer shelf beneath, and the power amp on the bottom shelf is that the noise floor is reduced to near blackness.

As a result, the higher frequencies enjoy low distortion, facilitating neutrality, transparency, tunefulness and a reasonably well-defined stereo image.

Decent mains/mains block and leads also help in this regard.

Steve.

My worsening disabilities preclude me from bending down the access equipment on lower shelves. I have the shelves available, I just cant get at them without lots of pain. Would I be better off with an integrated?

Thanks,

You will never need to touch the power amp as it should be just left switched on.

The CD player and preamp on the top two shelves with a spacer shelf beneath them should ensure that they are at a user-friendly height.

The only issue you have really is setting it all up in the first place. That's what dealers are for.

Alternatively try the Primare A30 integrated amp.

The 112 also never needs to be touched, as it is remote controlled (and powered from the 150).

You only need access to the CD player.

cheers, Martin

P.S. agreed - definately get the dealer to setup (if buying new!), will avoid lots of agro in your situation.
