network data software
Posted by: Tam on 03 June 2005
On my mac I have a little bit of software that shows in the menu bar (I suppose the equivalent of the taskbar on a pc) various information such as cpu usage and, more importantly how much data is being sent and received over the network by the computer. What I'm wondering is is there an equivalent (and free) bit of software for the pc?
regards,
Tam

Are you using windows? I think there is a system monitor that comes with windows?
There is a little app called
Speedfan that monitors your CPU temps/S.M.A.R.T enabled drives that also has a CPU usage monitor. It will also identify the chip you are using, your FSB speed etc (all the stuff overclockers like to know).
I think the traffic monitor would be dependent on the hardware you are using to send and receive data.

I using Windows XP (or 2000 / NT, IIRC), then you can configure PerfMon to do this.
You need to "add" another counter, and then select either Nework or RAS. Add "Bytes receiver per second" and "Bytes sent per second".
You can remove the other counters (if you want), then save it as whetever name you like.
You may also like to adjust the scale of the graph so that the maximum scale is equal to the highest speed of your connection. I am on 2mbps ADSL, so mine is scaled to 250kBps (2m / 8 bits per byte).
Add a shortcut to this in either the Start menu, or perhaps in the Startup folder.
cheers, Martin
