Sad reflections on the forum

Posted by: Nic Peeling on 05 December 2001

Until April this year I had been a regular reader of the forum for a period of a more than a year. Because I was very tied up redrafting a book I stopped visiting the forum regularly for seven months. I have been back for six weeks.

Before April I used, on average, to find a number of topics each week that I found very interesting. In the last six weeks I have found very few topics that have interested me greatly. I do not think that I have changed, which suggests to me that the nature of the forum has changed. Has anyone else noticed this and if so can anyone explain what has happened? I was greatly looking forward to returning as an active contributor but it now seems unlikely. Pity.

Richard, it happens in all the best forums that have become big from participation ... repetition is less here actually, inspite of everyone just talking mostly about one product, than what you find at Audio Asylum or Vinyl Asylum.

Anyway, sometimes the repetition can bring useful information not discussed earlier ...

we are determined to enhance our already strong status around the world with great products which make great music.

I also feel that Naim have brought out some really accessible products recently. The 5 series in particular has functionality that I wished existed when I bought my first Nait 3. I think the new 5 series products and the 500 is amazing. But most importantly they make music in the same way that seduced me when I bought my first Naim amp.

This does not mean selling out as those of you who take great pleasure in taking uninformed unintelligent pot shots at us.

The 'sell-out pot shotting' brigade are all idiots who can safely be ignored. I am yet to hear another manufactuer of audio equipment that produces such an involving sound. You don't need to be an audiophile to appreciate this - my wife and I get loads of friends and visitors who love music and are bowled over by the sound, we chat, eat and listen. It's great.

At my last house party we had 50 people over and the music was kicking. We had the 52 volume control at 12/1 o'clock on CD! And it went on until 6am, the only problem was that it was a bit too 'kicking' for Hampstead as the noise police eventually showed up and asked us to turn the volume down (apparently they could hear the bass-line in Kilburn!).

I'm glad you haven't lost your sense of SBL humour.
