iPod every time. To be honest though, I've never considered anything else.
Simple to use, excellent software, great aesthetics, and sounds plenty good enough for what it's intended to do - store and play your entire music collection when you're away from home.
How soon is your birthday? Mine's in July and I'm hoping to get a new iPhone as a present. Dunno if it'll be out by then though?

Thank you for asking this question - I have discovered my Sony CD Walkman is no longer reliable and so am looking to going this way - given I have main lined on Macs, going iPod will most likely be my route.
Any preference for which iPod should be bought(including e Bay as a source) will be used for a relatively static collection of music, classical and C&W

hi derek,
ive been looking for a while at the ipods (obvious choice) and the creative zens. one of the best deals ive seen so far is at www.amazon.co.uk where a 80gig video ipod is priced at around £220.
im almost certain to get this model but just wanted to get views on the forum of other mp3 players before taking the leap.

I don't think I would use an ipod that much so have sent my wish list to my wife with this.......................
it holds 240 songs which is enough for me and for £50 a great way in........ it's the new ipod shuffle.

I'm quite happy with my cellphone (Samsung A920) as an MP3 player. Has one of those tiny 512MB MicroSD cards.
Sounds no worse than the iPods I've listened to.

Where and how do you plan on using said player?
If use of use and compatability with plenty of accessories and car kits is important then go Apple.
In fact just go Apple and you won't be disappointed, just don't expect LP12 type quality.

I don't know what the reliability of the new iPod Shuffle is like, but I bought the previous model and I'm now on my fourth one. It's been one of the most unreliable products I've ever owned. I plan on never owning another iPod again.

Can I suggest that the first thing you should do with an iPod is throw away the headphones and buy a quality replacement....
The ones they give away with iPods are shocking...

I went with an ipod (80Gb video version) basically because they are THE mp3 player and therefore I just knew that any accessories and bits of software would work. Wife and son have iPod nano's so the iTrip, chargers and cables we have will work with them all. Also you know that audio and video podcasts will always work with an iPod as they are so universal.
The video is suprisingly good (I have about 10 films - which take between 0.5Gb and 1.0Gb each) which are good for entertaining the kids if we end up stuck in a traffic jam or waiting for hours in A&E (as we were a couple of weeks ago). Being an iPod a quick surf got me a couple of free downloads to re-jig the video format so I could transfer DVDs to iPod - I can't believe it would be as easy with one of the other makes.
Final reason is that iTunes just works easily. I ocasionally use Sony's sonic stage which is there equivalent (I use a minidisk as a way of transferring vinyl to CD for the car and also then transferring the CD to my iPod) and it is so bad in comparison.
I decided to get the biggest capacity I could so I'd have all my tunes on it all the time. The alternative would be to get an 8Gb nano which is reasonably big and just so tiny, but there's no video.
HTH Phil
ps - I held off getting an iPod for years and persevered with minidisk - however if my iPod broke tomorrow, I'd get another one the same day.

The sennheisers are great. Perfect for travelling as folding them away when you've finished listening protects them.
A friend has the Creative Zen - I personally find it bulky i comparison to the iPod and my own MP3 player, an iRiver H10. Great sound quality but compatible add-ons are near non existent so I couldn't recommend you to get one.

Steve O.

Or stolen out of my car in my driveway (!) in my case.
My son's Nano went through the wash, it is now dead even though I tried to bake out the water in a low temperature oven... Display, battery and diagnostics are fine just the shuttle wheel and buttons are toast.
Good lesson for him, he'll have to save up and buy another! Well, I guess it is a good lesson, teaching him such consumerism may not be so good...
Anyway, iPod is the way to go. Besides, Naim makes that nifty interface...

One other headphone recommendation - Etymotic ER6i. Cost about £70 but really are fab once you get them fitting properly. They block the surrounding noise really well so you can turn the volume down on your iPod and save your ears. Amazon had them at a good price I recall.

For some years I have had an IRiver H320.
At Christmas my wife bought me a 30gb Ipod (still not sure why..!)
I use the Ipod because it is dainty and neat and looks smart and I can stick it in a dock attached to the 102 with one cable and it updates itself to synch with ITunes on the laptop whenever hooked up via another.
The IRiver has much better quality of sound. You are not restricted to apple type encoding. Through software updates can also play movies/videos (although the screen is smaller) but is a little more chunky and less ergonomic than the Ipod (think a pack of cards rather than half a pack).
Apparently more modern IRivers still sound better than Ipods too.
I have improved the Ipod for personal listening with one of these.
(Although I haven't plumped for the belt option...)

Jamie, what phones do you use with your 'rig'? I read on the Head Hi site a post saying that unless you switched to v good quality headphones there was next to know benefit in having a headphone amp in the set up. This in fact put me off ordering on of the little beauties readily available from the States. I'd be interested in your experience.

Etymotic ER4. Had them a few years now. Usually it's the ER6 I see advertised now. Absolutely in your head experience and outside noise is cancelled through the plug effect of the phones. So excellent on Aeroplanes.

The Sony is worth a look... I couldn't live with the ultra short battery life of the iPod and the ones I've tried seem very very quiet.

It is all over, the format war is won, by Apple. You'll regret anything other than an i-pod.

well, actually 24 songs if you want decent sound quality. Which is a bit limiting. The 8Gig Nano s a good compromise.

Trouble is that apparently the shuffle sound quality is very poor and it's a bugger to find the track you want without a screen

Honestly, IRiver trounces it for sound and of course you can use wav files and just drag and drop from pc.
If you want apple tho', might as well wait for Iphone, no?
