hi all,

or the creative zen ?? have heard good feedback on both but cant decide between the two.
whats your choice and why ?

p.s. at present im only interested in the music side for holidays etc. so want the best sound for pound-and yes i have decent headphones already.

Thats the bit I never understood, why is drag and drop easier than iTunes? Its not.

I wouldn't use the Gadget Shows ratings as gods truth either, although if I was looking at such a small form factor I would probably consider the iRiver. However it was nearly 2 thirds more expensive than the shuffle.

All in all the Nano does everything I would want. As usual the iRiver offers too much to too little people, a geeks device.

Until one of these wannabes can come up with something better than iTunes they are never gonna win in my opinion, its not about the device its the software.

Gadget Show. Very very average if you ask me.

beg to differ after living with one for a couple of months.

sure it's not of the tree but don't use the supplied headphones and it's fine for traveling. you really need to like "shuffle" mode though, hence the name. I just create a smart folder that selects the latest songs added to the library.

Since they started to do video on the iPod's, the sound quality has gone down. Compared my 3rd gen 20gig with the new 30gig video (using my Etymotic ER6's) and my earlier version blew the video iPod away.

I'd love a video iPod but not until they sort out the sound quality or mine breaks, is lost or stolen.

Maybe when the next video iPod is released with a full width lcd screen as seen on the iPhone, that just might make me give in to temptation though.

Shouldn't be too far away as the price on the 80gig version has just dropped and we know that it means the new ones are due soon.

It would surely be suicide for apple to release an all screen ipod before the iphone is out though. Most every one would stick with their Sony POS phone and get a full screen iPod. I just don't see apple doing it yet.

More likely then, that Apple will release details of the new iPod around the time they start to ship the iPhone.

The next iPod will only be a stripped down iPhone anyway.

I love my 30g video iPod, sounds plenty good to me (hey, back in the old days, it was cassettes on a walkman), holds tons of music, also use it for photo dumps when I'm away from my home computer (no laptop), and, finally, I store my most vital Mac files on it as a remote backup hard drive.

All best,
Fred

iPoop. this summarizes my view of all this. i gave my girlfriend an ipod suffle and that's as far as it goes ....

well i have now took the plunge and got the ipod up n running tonight for the 1st time.
i must say i am quite pleased with it overall, i have sennheiser px200 cans which make a huge difference over the terrible buds supplied.
the itunes is a complete doddle for downloading music/videos/photos.
i was pissed off when i opened the ipod to see no dock supplied or charger!
this to me is taking the piss. the lead supplied is rather short too.
BUT with a newly delivered dock and leads/charger everything is back on track.
i would advise anyone with a large music collection to get the 80gig model as the pod fills up pretty quickly.

You see! It just works!

Yea they stopped off with the dock a couple of years ago. I think monster do a dock as well which has a more robust line out on it if you wanted to plug it in your hifi.

Also, I have a belkin dock which is actually part of a USB hub, that was 30 quid but you do get 5 usb ports as well.

After a few mini issues at the beginning I now have over 20GB of music loaded to the iPod via iTunes.

I am coming across the same issues with Gracenote as I did with FreeDB in missing details of Cds and missing album covers. (I believe the cover images come from Apple rather than from Gracenote)

The CDs that are missing the data often are from the classical side of the Naim label, also no Naim Forcione CDs have recovered album covers from the iTunes/Gracenote system.

However having all this music available where ever I am is rather nice as I am having to spend a fair amount of time away from the main system at the moment.

Gracenote gets very confused with classical.

Album covers come from iTunes.

You could purchase itunes catalog which will get the art for you and there are free ones as well. Or just google them and drag them onto the album in question.

Gary

Where and what is the iTunes Catalog, it does not appear in the iTunes help - I have registered with the iTunes shop.

I would be looking at the JBL on Tour or the JBL on Stage myself. I have heard them and they do more than they have any right too.

But most ofd this stuff sounds at most OK. Unless you start lobbing money at Bose and Apple themselves.

Gary,

I've just bought an 80G iPod and imported my mp3 collection from where they were ripped by Windows Media Player (which also grabs the album artwork for free - well most of them, I had to get a few off the net and scanned a few myself).

Are you saying that with iTunes you have to actually pay for the artwork ? Or have I missed something ?

I realise I can drag the artwork file from the windows folder to the iTunes album via the GetInfo dialog but this will take ages (500ish albums). Have you come across any software that will import the artwork that I already have ?

Cheers
Scott
