112 > 102? > 72

Currently have 72/hicap/140 with P9 and CDX and have been reading the threads regarding the new 112 / 150 combo, which indicate that the 112 is a significant improvement on the 72 and maybe even the 102.

Has anybody tried a series 5 component without the the other? eg 112 without 150 or vice versa? Results? I would be interested in a comparison of the 112 with 140 and hicap as I prefer the 72 Hicap to the 102 hicap combo.

If you prefer 72/Hi to 102/Hi, then I suspect that you'll not enjoy 112/Hi. The 112 sounds much more like the 102 than the 72. Besides, I don't think the jump is big enough to be bothered.

Mike,
I don't know if I understand you well, but the 102/hi/napsc 140, is much better than the 72/hi 140.

I agree. However, this fellow prefers the 72 to the 102. Since the 112 sounds more like the 102 than the 72, I suspect that it's not a worthwhile upgrade for him.

He would be better off to save for an 82. Or he could Super-Cap his 72, if he finds one cheap and would like to jump to a 52 for his next pre-amp. The Super-Cap will do some pretty cool things to a 72 (although I still prefer 102/NAPSC/Hi over 72/Super).

Hello.

There have been people who prefer the 72/HC over the 102/HC. I personally cannot understand fully why, but i supect it has a lot to do with system implementation. I'd always admired the 102/supercap. Found it to be a mini 52.

What you may find interesting is that in my older system full-mana'ed star grounded black snaic'ed (CDS1/supercap/passive135s/sbls) a 112 decimated the 72. The 112 was a quieter, tonally sweeter and more extended VERSION of the 72.

The improvement was great enough to render the 72 irrelevant in context of my tastes, set up,etc.
Now where the 102, 82 and 52 are better, (because yes, the 112 has shortcomings outside being in a class of it's own) are in the resolution of inner detail and progressively better intelligibility, musical integration.

Supercapped, the 112 will not be better than a supercapped 102 or 82 or 52.

But it's awfully hard to pay nearly double for the improvements that the 102 give - and these are valid improvements - because of what the 112 is doing so well in the first place (said above).

Hope this helps.
