Is it adviseable to get rid of the Trampolinn on my LP 12 in favor of the original base?

Posted by: Jaybar on 06 May 2001

I am having my TT serviced (Linn, Ekos, Benz L2, Lingo, Linto, original Sound Org Wall shelf. My fllors are concrete and walls are concrete/cinderblock/plaster. There has been some bebate whether or not the Trampolinn is a good thing. My dealer feels that it might be in my case. Any ideas? Since I am getting my TT serviced, this would be the appropriate time to change back to the original base. Comparison dems are not possible, so I have to rely on advice. Thanks.

...but I use a Sound Org wall shelf to support a Heybrook TT2 / RB300 / DV10x4. I'm not sure if the shelf qualifies as an "original"; it was bought about 12 years ago, and is a royal pain to level as the board is supported by six (three front, three back) upward pointing, threaded, rounded "spikes". The board itself was a very bendy thing, which I found was hugely improved by combustion, followed by replacement with 15mm MDF, and the feet on the Heybrook replaced with the tiny 3M "pips" supplied for the LP12 by Mana, among others.

Further improvements were gained by adding a sheet of 10mm clear float glass on top of the MDF (rub it arround a bit to clear the air out), also known as a "GreenLine" support (mail bob atherton for details; far less hassle than trying do do your own!).

In my own case I then went completely off the rails by adding two Mana Sound Frames (with duly diligent setup and a lot of bad language) between the MDF and the TT2... and am still enjoying it today smile

Best;

Mark

We resently had a paint-job, so that unless the Mana was the exact options of the Sound Org, I could not do it. I do not want to re-drill into the wall, replaster and repaint a section of the wall. The color never matches AND drilling into Concrete/cinder-block is a bitch. In replying, sonsider the SO shelf as a given.

Jay,

I agree with the others who have said you should try both for yourself. It is easy to switch between the two if you get someone to hold the LP12 up for you, or have it partially overhanging a solid support so that you can get to each corner, one at a time.

Having tried the Trampolinn on and off a Sound Org floor stander many years ago, I would say ditch it as soon as you can.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi Jaybar
The Trampolinn (and Lingo) have proved to be a disaster in my system and my dealer was able to accurately predict this. However, they work very well for other systems and people with different musical priorities to me.

In general terms, the Trampolinn seems to be more appropriate in systems with a wall mounted TT or no dedicated support at all. They also seem to be more appropriate in systems that are not full blown Naim.

Experienced dealers generally know what they are talking about. If they say stick with the Trampolinn (and you are happy with your system) I would follow their advice.

Cheers
Steve

Like most things, Mana can be easily painted - there's no rocket science about it. Anyway, once you've heard it you'll never worry about the look of the stuff anymore... :-)

Jaybar,

My vote would be to remove the Trampolinn, remove the LP12 baseboard, remove the Linn feet & replace with the Mana 3M ones. Change the top board of your existing wall shelf for a piece of 18 mm MDF, & get a Mana Sound frame. The Sound frame goes between the deck & wall shelf top board.

All of these ideas can be refitted if you are not happy & Mana offer a total refund if you are not happy.

These will leave no DIY apart from the Mana set up, more info from their forum.

Rob,

"Jay" has a Lingo in his system.

Would there still be any dangerous voltages inside a deck with external p/s? Surely if the platter isn't spinning it would be safe?

cheers, Martin

Does anyone have the exact details on the 'Mana' 3M feet?

3M have such a huge range in their catalogue of Bumpon feet, it would be an educated guess to get the right samples. Some dimensions / shape info would be useful (hemispherical / diameter etc.), and are they very compliant, or quite firm, as there appears to be some very compliant ones intended for optimum sound absorption.

I have a Trampolinn fitted to my LP12 and felt that it reduced the unfortunate degradation of moving it from the Origin Live support I used before my son arrived (with his potential for MC wrecking!) to the Target Wall shelf I'm now forced to use.

I'm willing to try again though, and need some suitable feet for the LP12, as I no longer have the originals.

Thanks,

Andy.
