DONOVAN's last year release

Posted by: urs on 19 July 2006

I would like to intoduce a beautiful Donovan CD, that was released last year under the title ''beat cafe''.
On acoustic bass is incredible Danny Thompson, and on drums Jim Keltner.
Very well recorded, and get it in your CD player.
For warm summer nights

Enjoy

Urs,

I have been meaning to purchase that one. I am a great admirer of Donovan and have many of his albums.

I also like his Sutras album from a few years ago which was produced by Rick Ruben. It was an album of acoustic guitar, Donovan's singing and some unobtrusive backing.

I don't have any of his albums but have heard the odd track that I like.

What would you consider to be his best album(s)?

Steve.

I will listen to the Sutras album that I don't know yet.
One of my favorite albums is ''a gift from a flower to a garden'', unfortunately not yet remastered.
Great Donovan CD's are (and remastered), released last year:
Sunshine Superman
Mellow Yellow
the hurdy gurdy man
Barabajagal
These are real classics, but then ''beat cafe'' is a littlie different, a little jazzy, not so much on the Folk side.

I'm sure it has been, I saw it recently at a record fair but was too embarrassed to buy it! (According to Amazon, on the Collectors Choice label in 2001). Fondly remembered as the most preposterously ornate boxed set of the late sixties, and I do vaguely remember enjoying the tunes - which I think were all written at the Maharishi's hang-out at the time the Beatles were writing the White Album songs and Mike Love was growing his beard.

''a gift from a flower to a garden'' is exactly from that Maharishi time. The nice Vinyl Box contained two LP's. One was the electric album, the other one the acoustic album.
On the electric album he had Harold McNair on flute, who also played in Ginger Bakers Airforce.
I have a CD copy from BGO from 1993.
EMI re-released last year a bunch of Donovan CD's. EMI says the did not re-release it remastered, as there was no bonus material.

"What would you consider to be his best album(s)?"

I have all of Donovan's 60s albums on vinyl. These LPs were all well recorded and sound excellent in their original format. Watch out for some of the very early LPs which were re-processed stereo, get the mono versions instead.

Great LPs
Sunshine Superman (mono)
Mellow Yellow (mono)
Hurdy Gurdy Man (genuine stereo)
Donovan In Concert (genuine stereo)
Gift From A Flower To A Garden (stereo, this two LP set was also released as two single LPs)
Barabajagal (genuine stereo)
Open Road, this one is underated and excellent

Other albums are good such as his 70s LPs Slow Down World and 7 Tease but I would start with the ones above.
