Does Apple i Tunes softwear mess with your MS windows?

Posted by: flyfisher on 15 July 2007

I have been having big problems with my laptop.

My friendly IT helper took one look at my machine, and was very rude when he found that I had loaded the i tunes software, for my stepdaughter to update her i pod.

He claims that this software messes with windows, and I am just another exmaple of the many that he has seen.

Although I have un installed i tunes, my Outlook is still barely crawling along.

Any one else had i tunes problems?

No, because I'm using Apple OS X "Tiger" ;-)

Quite seriously, do you think iTunes would be so omnipresent and practically universal if it "messed with windows" like your IT guy implies? Like any other App it will use some processor time... but it shouldn't cripple your computer in any way. Have you checked to see if you have filled you hard disc to almost full? This is often the reason for a major performance decrease. Do you have anough memory to run all the Apps you like to have running simultaneously? (1Gbyte of RAM is usually a good idea). When's the last time you updated your software programs or Windows OS to keep on top of developments?

This might be more appropriate in the Padded Cell section....

But yes, it messes with windows...everything does to a certain extent. With programs loading (sometimes) their own version of an operating system file...which can sometimes have a negative effect on other programs...

In Windoze EVERYTHING messes up the OS. In my case no problems so far with ITunes on Windoze.

The newest version of Itunes interefered with MS Outlook on my PC running XP Pro.
Outlook encountered a 'serious error' that did not allow it to 'start normally'.
Windows guessed that it was because of Itunes trying to synchronise or something like that with Outlook and asked me 'if I really wanted Itunes to sync with Outlook'.
I typed 'NO' and all has been fine after.

Synching an email programme with a music server.

No wonder illegal downloading's rampant! Big Grin

The thing with itunes is to find a version that works fine with your o/s, then ask yourself if your really need to update when itunes asks you to.

I have to confess i am saving up for a mac pro, so i can bootcamp into either osx or windows, partly to cure some issues like this.

Unfortunately you need to load i tunes just to get music from a cd, loaded onto an i pod. I never downloaded any music.

It's more likely something else that's causing the problem.

There are two or three particular things that can slow a machine:

1. A process hogging the CPU. If you do Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Windows Task Manager, and look at the processes, you can see which process is using what percentage of the CPU. (System Idle is a pseudo-counter for unused CPU, and is at 99% on mine at the moment).

2. You haven't got enough memory in the machine. If you select the Performance tab in Windows Task Manager, you can see how much memory is being used. My wife's laptop is slow because it hasn't got enough memory.

3. You've got some malware on the system (virus, adware, etc.). This one is more troublesome.

Those are just a starter for 10, and getting to the root of performance problems can be a bit intricate...

And sometimes the solution for problem No.3 actually causes problem No.1 - some antivirus programs have serious system overheads.

Bizarre isnt it, but true! It happened to me last week when my auto-updater downloaded Itunes vers 7.0.3.54 - MS Outlook froze and the PC helpfully suggested that it was the new ITunes-Outlook affair that was causative

Not quite. Try this Plug-in for Windows Media Player. It's free to try for 30 days then it cost me AUS$18 to purchase. I didn't like the way that iTunes wouldn't download the album art that Media player had grabbed when I originally ripped my CDs. It wanted me to create an account at iTunes along with my credit card details which I thought was a bit much.

(Note to Mac users I'm not criticising iTunes on the Mac but I prefer Media player for Windows. Oh and it just worked when I moved from XPSP2 to Vista recently).

Cheers
