Nait 2 balance

Posted by: Bosh on 10 May 2001

Picked up a SH planar2/Nait2/Kan1 as 2nd system to my 52/4pack/SBL. Find the left channel inaudible at background listening levels (but fine at higher levels. Is this a characteristic of the Nait2 or is there a problem.

PS Suprised at how good it sounds

It's a frustrating problem, that is most prevalent with high level (usually CD) sources.

It's due to the loss in channel matching at very low levels of the volume pot, it may be possible to improve the situation by selecting a better matched pot, but this is a time consuming process.

Attenuating the input will help, but is likely to affect sound.

My 42 and Nait1 suffers the same 'problem',as did my Nait3.

The 112 eliminates this problem entirely, by not using a pot at all.

The higher quality Alps (blue in colour) pots are often better than the cheap carbon track ones fitted to early amps / pre-amps, but still suffer to a certain extent.

My first Nait-2 (old-style) had the same problem.
It was pretty irritating, when listening at low volumelevels. My most recent Nait-2 (new-style)
operates better in this area.
The Nait-3 doesn't have this problem at all,but...
(I'll take it for granted,since I like the Nait-2 a litle better)

If they wouldn't have invented CD, and stick to vinyl, this balance thing wouldn't have to bother anyone... (nag, nag, haha)
