Ornaments placed on CD5

Posted by: cunningplan on 17 August 2003

I've gto a slight dilemma with regard my system. I recently persuaded my wife that I should have my Flatcap 2 now and not wait until Xmas, but with the proviso from her that she could place an ornamental bowl on top of the CD.
I've had my Flatcap but have gone back on my promise to place her beloved bowl on top of the CD5 you can only imagine the grief I'm getting.
My question is does it, or will it, degrade the sound over a period of time it doesn't appear to do at present (but I've told her it does)I would appreciate views from you guys otherwise any future upgrades to the system stops now!
Regards
Clive

Metal would be bad.
I don't know about china/glass.

Just periodically test it. If it is ok now it should be ok this time next year....relax.

Clive

Naked CD5 vs CD5/FC2 (with or without bowl) = no-brainer.

If that's the only compromise you have to make with The Boss to have the FC2, go for it!

If its crystal glass, put an object in it to stop any possible ringing. If its ceramic, still do the same as Its unlikely to affect sound quality.

Had you just put the bowl on top, as agreed; you could have saved yourself a lot of grief.

What Mick said.

If it sounds ok now, don't worry about it.

no offence to your wife, but why anyone would want to place a decorative bowl on top of a cd5 is beyond me! david

Fasten the bowl on with blu-tac....
stop it vibrating due to the extra bass the flat cap will give your system lol

Why do you tell her it degrades the sound when it doesn't? Not a very cunning plan.

Thanks for the input guys I suppose it boils down to aesthetics. It doesn't look that nice, but as most of you say it shouldn't really make any difference to the sound. You've made the missus happy Smile

Why is she so bothered?

Is this her pound of flesh/your penance for your hi-fi habit?

Nothing should be placed ontop of the CD5!

Steve.

Clive,

I have it from my wife that the bowl is symbol, it is your wife who would like to be on top!

And I thought Freud was out of favour!

Well, Steven, why are you so bothered? You may or may not be aware that marriage means you live together.

Don't we at least get another pseudo-scientific theory to tell us why not - even if Clive says he doesn't hear any difference? I mean why should he trust his ears as long as there's you to advise him?

For the record, there's a little Cycladian horse statuette on a Hi-Cap in my 2nd sistem. Bronze (a copy obviously). And there's a (almost) life-size marble Greek head on one of my Epos speakers. Not only does the music sound just as good; it looks a lot better, too.

And I put them there myself.

Your next move must be to try to improve the sound quality by changing the position of the bowl. Also, if the bowl is asymmetrical, rotating it will surely alter the sound quality. If you can convince your wife that optimal sound is obtained with the bowl close to one edge plus rotated in a position that is displeasing to her eye she may remove it.

Herman,

What happens if you turn up the volume? Do you ever do that?

I can imagine the sound of those things rattling atop your speaker/Hi-cap.

Mrs Mick has placed an 8" china, pot which contains a flowering purple orchid, on top of the 32.5 in the dining room system. It has been there for the last 6 months.

It sounds just the same with or without the bloody pot on it.

Forget about the ornament and play the music.

Well, yeah Steven, I guess I do turn up the volume - between 8:30 and 10 max. Does this count as volume?

The archaic horsey doesn't rattle, and the Greek head weighs over twenty pounds easy. A visit of the Rammstein TW Riders wouldn't make it rattle.

possibly I'm not anal enough to put my ear to the floor checking out all the time whether a pretty little statuette on a Hi-Cap is rattling ever so slightly. (Because I'm pretty sure it doesn't.)

The question is: does this diminish my musical pleasure, or does it enhance my pleasure?

I know what I'm voting.

I have played the system very loud, as loud as the 250 will allow in a small room. I can't even get the windows to rattle, and I have loose windows. Anyone who can get something to rattle atop the CDP must be using a crap support such as quadraspire.

Try this. Place the bowl on top of the CD5, as agreed, and then place the FC2 on top of the bowl. The separation of the power supplies in the CD5 and FC2 are bound to give you an improvement in sound and you kept your side of the bargain.

How about building a nice little shelf that straddles the CDP, specifically for the bowl.

Your wife will see how much you are willing to please her, it'll look nice, and the CDP will be unaffected...

...as long as the bowl and shelf have their own dedicated mains spur, of course. Roll Eyes

Good luck!

My old dear has a huge a/v subwoofer that can move the pictures on her walls. Mind you, it does sound bloody terrible.
