Truly sad news, also because I happened to live in close neighbourhood with the Stockhausens and his trumpet playing son Markus (whose music I also admire) was in the same school with me. Musically, quite a loss. 20th century music would be different w/o Stokhausend compositions.

Very sad news - he was innovative.
At university, way back in the 70s, I attended his concerto for short-wave radio and another piece that involved the players only playing when they were thinking of nothing.
I know he influenced Delia Derbyshire - one of my all time favourite creators of electronic music.
I also attended a showing of a lecture he gave where he explained what was music and what was rubbish/noise. He described it in terms of his own work - explaining which bits he wanted to keep and which he felt should be thrown away. It was very interesting.

Sad but no loss to me. Orchestrating a lorry load of scaffolding crashing never appealed to me.
