Are Jewel cases all they are cracked up to be?

The ones I have purchased recently are,the plastic is almost as thin as cellophane & most of them have been cracked,I have begun to look for albums in the Digi packs or better still on the Black Stuff!

Never has a phrase been so ironically and cynically misused.
"Jewel cases" are, and always were, exceptionally nasty packaging, taking up unnecessary shelf space and using plastics completely unnecessarily.

They were cool when they first came out but sometimes a pain. I like the cardboard ones they now come out with, they're getting back to artwork and intriguing fold outs and booklets.

These DDC style lift-out types work well IMO.
I agree that cardboard ones often crammed with goodies are best. Smile

Unfortunately continual use of these cardboard covers, may also scratch the cd or damage from ones finger nails trying to get them out?

Analogue,

What do you do to release the Cd? I just push the centre spindle and hey presto! Cd pops out. I prefer the older more robust Cd cases, the new super jewel ones and the digipack ones. Though does anyone not see that buying Cd's at far less a price than when Cd first came out being the culprit here profit has to come from somewhere.

The cardboard sleeves often come with a nice non-scratch plastic liner Chris.
For those that don't I put in spares which are easily available from certain commercial websites. Winker

Unfortunately John they also are the main cause of cracked cd's.

It is noticable that you see more MFSL and DCC discs cracked than any others out there.

Reason, people trying to get the discs out of the case.

Personally I am not that keen on them.

You can get new ones in the UK but at £3.50 a case not worth it.

I'm far too butter fingered to handle vinyl without damaging it Ewen.
If I was so clumsy I damaged CDs removing them from a lift out style case I'd have to stick with computer audio.
Fortunately for my ears I'm not that bad. Yet. Winker Big Grin

i'm all for sustainable packaging. i.e card!

digipacks (which have plastic tray) have a big enough spine to finger through.

where as I find digisleeve or digifile (which have no plastic protective layer) a bit annoying as they don't stand out as much on the shelf (and you guys are right, you end up fingering the disc itself a little too much). despite having no plastic...these solutions are also really expensive to make! (don't ask me why!)

as they become more popular, its getting easier for smaller labels to use digipacks (we have alot recently).

its also made it alot easier for manufacturers to become carbon neutral (less plastics)

the jewel case is becoming shockingly cheap to mass produce now though (in comparison manufacturing prices are growing steadily...for some reason!)

The best jewel case boxes IMHO are the ones used by the Japanese.

In fact they seem to care more about packaging than any other country. All the mini lp sleeved discs that I have from Japan have a cloth inner sleeve. The card is thicker and softer as well.

Even their digi paks are stronger made.

The problem with digi paks is that if the inner plastic cd holder is cracked then you can't replace it.

ah give me good old cd jewel cases anytime.

I'm a big fan of lift-locks. You can get them for USD 1.50 @ elusivedisc. I have all my DCC and MoFi's in them. The reason they didn't rule the market is less cost than folks are just not getting how to use them. I have almost 700 CDs in lift-locks (many for over 20 years) and not a single one of them has even the slightest scratch but I never let anybody else open them as folks try to prey them out before they fully open the case.
