Is it necessary to clean new vinyl?

Posted by: Nigel 66 on 06 August 2009

Dear forum members

I hope this isn't too daft a question . . . .

Whilst it obviously makes good sense to clean 2nd hand or old vinyl, is there any need / benefit to cleaning brand new records?

Any comments?

You occasionally hear tell of residues left on vinyl after pressing, but I think it varies. I've had a couple of new records recently that did require a scrub up. Bizarrely, my copy of Phantom Limb from Naim also needed cleaning, but after a several plays. The surface noise increased dramatically, but it's fine now after a clean

Some vynil and CDs can have an excess of mould release agent on them.

Some of my vinyl had an excess of mould!

Always worth cleaning new vinyl - I do it as a matter of course because it also considerably reduces static.

If you watch the Michael Fremer DVD it's a must do.
