Twisted?

Posted by: willem on 17 March 2003

Basically because I wanted to shorten them a bit (the wall outlets are about 50 cm from my new Mana 3 tier) I twisted the mains cables of my Armageddon, Nait3 and CD3. Boy, was I in for a surprise! The effect was simply STUNNING (if you forgive me the capitals). The sound of my trusty Nait3 that you all know can get a bit weedy and analytical at times, suddenly became solid and very, very musical. It sounds like a much more powerful amplifier.

So, what did I do wrong? I hope it is electrically safe? Has anyone ever tried this before and –if not- would you be prepared to give it a go and let me hear what you think?

How did you twist them - are they wound round each other?

No, I did them like you see girls doing their hair, like a ponytail

1 tail ponytail
2 tails pigtails

Willem the word you are after is plait or braid, not twisted

Tom,

One more mention of that esoteric hippy crap and you're out.

I'm sorry Jeremy, I haven't yet found out how to put a picture in here. Can't even use the icons.

I heard this before. Some believe that all the power cords should be braided together so that the electromagnetic fields that they create cancel out each other. I think I will try it today.

I guess it works on the same principle as UTP (unshielded twisted pair)used to connect PC's to networks. The more twists per metre the more noise rejection. Has anybody tried using a few lengths of Cat5 for mains leads?

It took some time, but I finally managed to put an image on the forum of the braided cable. Hope you're still interested.

Have fun,

This gets the prize for the most Erudite Post in a long while. Tom is like the Flat Earth Ovidius (with a kitty kink). There's a lot of Forum history in these simple words.

Other than that I have to say the braided picture induced some terrible nausea - I mean this is happening in the very town where I live. Look at this plant. look at those wires! They're dying! Please Willem, do something!

Our bits and bobbs lying around the computer have ferrite blobs at the "source" end of the cables.

Is this where the knots should go? If so, is it reducing RFI that is coming into the cable but not RFI that is picked up by the cable downstream of the knot?

Why not (knot?) tie the knot near the output end of the cable?

Herm, I think you're just jealous of my Mana. It makes the Solid Steel sound like a dead plant!

Herm,

The plant is alive and kicking at a much higher level than is shown on the picture. The photo was supposed to be of the cable, not of the plant. I think you're just jealous of my Mana, which makes the Solid Steel sound like a dead plant in comparison!

Bleep, why can't I get one of those nice smiling gremlins in here now!

Have fun!
