Processor and DVDP

Posted by: marvin the paranoid android on 11 November 2005

Has anyone any experience with the Cyrus AV8 processor and DV8 DVDP?
Presently we use an Onkyo DVP and Yamaha E800 processor with NAC92/NAP140 for front speakers, they were ok to start with, but now ouputting into Panasonic 42" plasma (and a DLP projector will join us at xmas ) a better font end will surely benefit the displays?
I can't justify the cost of a DVD5 and AV2 combo plus NAPV175, hence the interest in Cyrus, which can be upped later on with PX2 powersupplies, I believe?

Cheers

Has no one got an opinion at all?

No one interested? I know it is a Naim site, but someone must have looked/listened to them at some stage.

I would be flabbergasted (if I could spell it)

I think it's ok, but nothing special. What amps would you be planning to feed the centre and rears from? Once you start moving up the AV scale it's probably best to try and aim for same make amps and speakers so that you get same tonal qualities. If I were you, I'd stick with what you have a little longer and maybe look at going for an n-Vi if your thinking AV8, DV8 + AMPs money..

I was thinking of going the whole cyrus hog and use their smart amps.
At present I use a NAC92/NAP140 for the fronts and the Yamaha E800 has the amps for centre and rear.
The decision may come a bit sooner than I thought as the present dvdp (onkyo dvsp-500) has started to 'roll' the image (the screen split with the top below the bottom, a la bugs bunny cartoons, I didn't thinjk a dvdp would do that!) and I do not want to cough up again for something equally disposable. I believe the Cyrus is serviceable as well as up-gradeable.

I must admit that I did not know that Naim have produced a 1 box machine. Still very expensive though.

Do you use Audio Excellence in Worcestor? I still travel 100 miles to get my "fix" as Norman puts it. I'm visiting this weekend or next to get a new cartridge for the venerable P3, so no doubt will view some alternatives there. Pity Maurice doesn't want Cyrus.

Marvin.

Have a look under n-Vi both here and on the main forum.

Single box contains dvd/processor/preamp/five-power amps and cost £3,000 or they can add DAB tuner module for another £250. Dealer might do credit....

Picture when I saw it last Thursday was excellent (via 43" Pioneer plasma) and the sound was pretty good too (comming via four n-Sat, n-Centre and n-Sub)

You could probably trade in everything you have at present and still have a better al-round system.

Delivery expected before Xmas

Cheers

Hi Don

Had a quick look at the products page, it is shown on the 'upgrade' window.

£3000 does sound quite a chunk of pennies in one go, though I must also admit I haven't thought of selling any of my present stuff, especially the 92/140 as I guess no one would want them. Bang goes a new pair of tyres for my le mans!

I don't want to sell my cdx2 and 2 xhannel stuff though, it is very pleasant having 2 sets, at least I can escape and listen to music rather than let the trouser wearer deafen me with some diabolical (but noisy) hollywood remake. (is it me, or have they run out of ideas?)

Cheers

Yes still see Maurice and Norman as the shop is dangerously only a few hundred yards from my door. I must admit I haven't been in there for a while, I think the last time was when Norman zapped my AV2 & DVD5 with the latest firmware. I'm just in the process of trying to sort out something to play my vinyl on so may be popping in there this weekend to look at cartridges and phono stages to go with a P25 I have just bought. Smile

Had a chat with Maurice regarding rega cartridges, it appears the els2 is better than the previous super elys, and is a lot cheaper at £110.
A good thing about rega carts is that when they are worn out, you can either have them serviced or part ex them against another rega.

Also, check out the rega fono. They can also get you a heed orbit 2 for your p25, I only wanted it as a way of changind speed easily, some folks reckon it does a good job in the speed stability, sound quality arena too.

My trouser wearer has just returned from work and now wants to look at the naim in box. I do hope they haven't got one to demo!

Yes Maurice suggested to me a Stageline + Elys2 and some folk on here suggested the fono + exact so I have a few choices to try out. I like the simplicity of the fono over the stageline but then like the idea that at a later stage if I supercap my 282 I can reuse my hicap on the stageline. I also like the idea of the heed orbit 2 as know the missus will hate the speed change on the Rega.

I don't know if Maurice or anyone has the n-Vi stuff in yet, but it will be good to see I'm sure. I do know that Audio-T in Cheltenham will be having Naim come to their shop with all their latest goodies (555, n-Vi etc...) for a late evening on the 24th.

Why not integrate the 2 systems? At least that is my own plan. Yes it probably is nice to have them separate, but what would the stereo sound like with the HT spewing bloated bassy sound effects throughout the house???

PJT

We started off with the 2 systems combined, but I didn't like my arcs' being subjected to the bass sound effects. We bought a sub-woofer thingy to see if that worked, but finally had to get seperate speakers, it now has Dynaudio contour 1-1 as fronts and the boss has yet to strain them.
Beside which, if the superior being is playing with her toys, I put my headphones on! (if it is realy noisy I take the dog for a walk)

Seriously though, it does give us greater flexibility to have seperate systems.

Unfortunately, the one-who-shall be obeyed has already taken an interest it the new one box afair (she always has wanted the AV2 + good DVDP), however, if it is nearly as good as the AV2/DVD5 etc combo then it represents quite a considerable saving, which in actual fact would enable a P9 instead of a P5!
That should stop the rot!

Cheers

I just checked the Naim website and notice that the DVD5 model doesn't have the progressive scanning option but has the de-interlacing option. I understand that most of advanced (high quality) DVD players (like the new Naim n-vi model for example) have this option. Would Naim consider to add this feature to the DVD5 model?
Posted on: 24 November 2005 by SimonJ
Progressive scan & de-interlacing are in the same thing. The DVD5 definately outputs a progressive scan signal by component or DVI/HDMI.
