I try to avoid driving anywhere, anytime in the South of England as the traffic can be horrendous. I have a 100% success rate in this endeavour.

I took them when I was there a few years ago. The girl in the boat is Zoe, who was a classmate of mine at the time.

Steve,

I suggest you discuss class war with the lads from Lea Rowing Club or City of Sheffield RC...

It is a total cliche to claim that everyone involved in rowing is born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Far from it.

As well as bringing substantial commerce into the community, substantial sum are channelled onwards into supporting sports development and various other good causes.

Yada, yada, yada... yawn.

Isn't this something you admit to grudgingly, like having had cosmetic surgery (I have not).

Some of you folks - particularly those who haven't been, or who have no interest in the sport of rowing (in which GB is a world leader) - seem to forget that Henley Regatta is a Rowing World Cup quality international sporting event. Roll Eyes

The majority of responses have told me what I need to know - that no-one else on the Forum is very interested in the sport of rowing, so I won't bother mentioning it again.

I agree rowing gets too much bad comments from the uneducated riff-raff, best feel sorry and ignore them. I wuz born 'n bread in Marlow, it used to be the home of the best regatta on the Thames, but now screwed up as its moved to the Dorney duck pond. The Marlow event that is left is OK, but we do miss the international teams. Marlow was, and still is, home to the great Steve Redgrave, his mother and mine were neighbours. He and I shared the same school (nothing to be proud about) and got clipped round the ear by “Smithy” the same teacher who introduced Steve to rowing. He only introduced me to the subtleties of accurate blackboard chalk throwing and the purity of the bounce off a boy’s head.
In the 60’s I used to help maintain the regatta umpires launches, built incidentally by the Henley boat builders Hobbs & Sons, I worked for the then “old man Hobbs” brother at J.G.Meakes of Marlow in the engine & electrical department.
I used to attend Henley & Marlow every year, and did it properly, striped blazer and white slacks, and believe me Sergeant Pepper cannot be fully understood until you have spent an afternoon with the holy herb Ganja, laying on the grass & listening to the brass band at Henley (or Marlow).
For the last 15 years I worked in Ireland with a guy who was about 1 notch down from Olympic level single & double sculls. His level of fitness was something else. To be fit is one thing, but fit enough to row at that level cannot be appreciated until you see it firsthand.
I now live close to Oxford and get to see a lot of rowing, both the university and the local clubs.
And finally I was in Henley only yesterday and walked to the “Flower Pot” for lunch.

Might just go see if the blazer still fits for next year. Winker

I enjoyed my day at Henley. I was studying at Oxford a the time. Whilst I had never rowed prior to going to Oxford, I was lucky enough to make onto my college team for the Summer Eights. (The opening paragraph of Brideshead Revisitied has been forever changed for me.) A remarkable experience. Rowing is a terrific sport in the way it combines absolute fitness, teamwork (you have NO choice but to head to the river for training when that 4:00am alarm goes off - the boat doesn't work with 7 people), technology and social life. I felt it to be a quintessential Oxford experience.

One of my classmates also rowed in the blue boat at the Boatrace. That was a good day out. "We" spanked them.
