Pure streamer from Naim?

Hi, will Naim build a pure streamer?
Posted on: 21 May 2009 by spacey
id buy one would be nice if naim could find the space in the SN as an optional extra like the r323 port

Hi, I don't think you will find here answers about these sort of questions about new products.

Anyway, my bet is Naim will launch streamers in a near future. It looks pretty logical once you are marketing DACs. A two box music server solution (streamer + DAC) and you just have to use a NAS or a computer as storage solution.
HDX (plus DAC as an upgrade) for those who don't want to deal with computers.

Depends on what you want it to do, and how...in theory, the Uniti should be able to perform the same function as a typical Linn DS unit, at a much better performance level than the Sneaky DS–and with a decent CD player as well.

Also–one very important point–I feel that the "Multi-room DS" bit is a misnomer, inasmuch as a true multi-room system should be able to send synchronous streams to multiple zones, just as a traditional analog matrix switcher system can.

The Linn DS units cannot, but NaimNet can–and can do video as well.

just like a Linn DS with Naim sound, with or without DAC...

I doubt it; after all Pure never built a Naim portable radio AFAIK

The NaimUniti might be what you are after

I sure hope not..... I dont want Naim to make computer peripherals.

If a router cannot affect the SQ, I wont expect the streaming solution to either. A DAC is all you need.

A streamer without a DAC? What for? Then what's next? Naim Router, Naim Modem, Naim HDs, Naim mouse, Naimmini?

it only needs to be the size of a matchbox so could fit into an existing product. like dacs pres amps etc.

I thought the OP asked about a "pure" streamer. I took that to mean, it does nothing else.

This is exactly what I do not want.

The HDX, Naimnet (and uNiti I suppose) satisfies that portion of the market... and quite well.

HDX!!

Actually PC, I'm curious to hear your opinion after the DAC is released in a computer set-up vs. the HDX/DAC combination.

My guess from what I've heard is that there will be a big difference in music quality for a variety of reasons, including the music player portion of the HDX.

But, we'll see.

HDX - internal disks - cd slot + better dac = perfect streamer....that's what i mean!
I'm running a HDX/XPS so this sounds great but i do not use the internal disks:-) all my music comes from NAS!

AmeriGary,

Yes sir... that will be my first demo.

My current PC with Naim DAC vs. HDX with Naim DAC.

I am not going to get into who or what does the rips quite yet. I am going to concentrate on what is feeding the DAC and if that makes a sonic difference.

Given that the HDX is out of my budget and especially if it can be improved upon by the eventual Naim External DAC, I will start with a Naim DAC. That is a given.

If the HDX improves things dramatically, I suppose I am screwed. Well my plans on buying a house are Eek

I dont expect the HDX to make a huge difference though.

It will probably still just be merely a very nice ripper and hard disc player. I cant imagine buying an HDX for this very limited application...

-Patrick (very excited to hear the Naim DACs)

HDX - much much bigger internal disks - cd slot + better dac + all in one box= perfect streamer....

Minus the disc-ripping and internal storage, the HDX would still be a server, not a streamer (probably best termed a "stream renderer" or "stream player"). And a network file player (not a stream player).

Me too, if Naim DAC is mainly aimed to computer audio it should give its maximum performance through it. A computer is perfectly capable of stream top bits if properly setup. A dedicated streamer would be nice though, but IMO more because of convenience than because of performance.

...so did NAIM show the DAC in Munich?

what would be nice is if the dac had a built-in streamer and connected to a laptop which you could download and install naimnets media playing software onto. then you music could be on a computer system as before. the only thing needed is the sofware really but a nicely synced streamer is an advantage its like the AE/itunes setup only 24/192 and with a proper dac.

Sounds like a Linn DS player.

Yes we so need a Naim DS player. I would buy that in a heartbeat. Even if it mean I have to part with my much loved Transporter.
Posted on: 22 May 2009 by T38.45
hi JYOW, same for me...i would sell my hdx for a pure streamer now i know what streaming can do!
