Equipment Placement

I'm sure this has been covered a million times but I will still ask the question:

Which components need to be separated?

I assume CDPs and preamps live together and power amps, power supplies etc camp somewhere else.

What about pre-pre-amps like a HeadLine? Do they sleep with the preamps or the power amps?

It seems that if you have a two-tower rack it will be a bit unbalanced, what with all the power stuff; eg power amp, XPS, SuperCap, HiCap (for the Headline) on one side and only a CDP, pre-amp and HeadLine on the other side.

The Headline is classed as brain but the PSU feeding it - NAPSC or Hi-cap - would be brawn.

You don't necessarily have to have brawn and brain components on different racks as long as there is a spacer shelf dividing them if they are to be placed on the same rack.

In fact it is worthwhile having the CD player atop one rack and the pre atop the other.

I thought Naim recommended a minimum separation of one foot between pre and power.

I had assumed that this holds true for all devices which fall into either of the two classes.

Comments?

Hi Jack

Steven has said it really - you need two stacks. Powered items on one and pre-amp stuff on the other. It will sound better that way.

The ideal separation between pre and power is as far as the interconnect will reach. Practicality normally dictates something a bit shorter.

Fraim seems to be designed to get Burndy connected items about as far apart as is sensibly possible.

If you put your brain (no powered transformers at the top end) and brawn (with transformers) in two stacks. Where do you put the AV processor that has a powered transformer - with the brain but won't that mess up the brain. Put it with the brawn but wont that mess up the AV sound, put it on the other side and the leads wont be long enough to go from left brain (AV) to right brain (Power)?

Not at the level yet where my brain is free of transformers or steel but any experience out there?

It's obvious - you need three racks laid out in a triangle!

Get a two-box processor - or stick your current one either with the brawn or in another room. Razz
