Jools Holland Later tonight
Posted by: Diccus62 on 15 September 2009
Sounds like a great line up tonight with one of my faves Alela Diane, the wonderful Lyle Lovett, rock demi gods Muse, trendy fashionista Florence with her Machine, Jimmy Cobb (last remaining musician who played on Kind of Blue) and Beth Ditto's visually stunning Gossip
I wish it was on a bit earlier

Just watched it on the iPlayer.
The Gossip were fantastic - much prefer listening to Beth Ditto than hearing Florence wailing...

Totally agree!
I thought it was a really good opening programme. Variety and everything was interesting. Even Stewart Copland plugging his book and show were ok, and nice to see the 'Rock Goes to College' clip, a series much loved of my teenage years.

Just two words - Jimmy Cobb.

Its a real shame BBC seem to have lost the skill or the will to get the sound right these days.
Its one thing having ear blasting rock with crap mix & levels, but the Jimmy Cob set up was way off. Piano sounded like it was in another room.
I then changed to the Choir prog on BBC-4, more educational than listening, but its seems the BEEB does have some sound mixing skills left.

The sound quality/mix on the HD feed was very good I thought.

Shame they weren't all in an other room, preferably one without mikes.

You made me laugh Howard

Good to see the Gang of Four on tonight, better watch the extended version when it is on. Sorry but Dizzy does not really do it for me. My kids love Bonkers, which is ok, but the first track he played was crap.

did none of you guys spot Yola from Phantom Limb nailing the backing vocals for Dizzie's first song last night?!

nic, for the above reason, musically i am not commenting on dizzie in general

I caught a bit of last night's show.
Did anyone else hear a resemblance in the Shakira track 'She Wolf' to Talking Heads in the early 80's. I looked on the web, and the track is written by a couple of American Musicians John Hill, Sam Endicott who have been in the indie scene, so there is quite possibly some influence.
The rhythm guitar and synth lines felt Talking Heads to me, although the vocals were definitely not in the sardonic David Byrne style.
I won't rush out and buy the album, but I quite enjoyed the performance (somewhat to my grumpy old man surprise).

I think it helped me that she looked as sexy as hell!
I really liked the XX performance, Gladys Knight sounded in great form and I think Jonny Marr broke a string! A good show all round for me.

Shakira is too sexy - I don't think she has any bones in her body!
The XX were predictably great - hoping for another song on Friday night's show.
You can download their cover of 'You've got the love' from thefader.com They've turned it into a sort of UK Funky/2 step track and it's really good

Cheers for that. Have you heard the XX version of footsteps? Can't find it to purchase but would really like it.

Yeah, listened to Footsteps on youtube. It may surface somewhere. I'll keep checking out the singles to see if it's a B side

After hearing Mika, I strongly suspect he is the musical genius behind Mr Hanky The Christmas Poo.

It took my wife to spot the fact that it was a cover!
Really good band, lets hope that The Heavy pop up this series.

I tuned in a bit after the start, and promptly switched off when the first band I saw were so obviously miming.

Confused by this.
To my knowledge (and its possible there may be the odd exception) no bands mime on Later with Jools. I've certainly seen loopers being used to generate rhythms and fills, but I can never recall seeing any actual miming. Maybe the audio sync wasn't quite right on you feed that made it seem like that?
