Sorry another verses question! But I'm not old enough to have heard the old stuff! ;)

My local dealer tells me he has an early (Chrome?)
32.5, Snaps, and 250 for around £500 and I have no experience with these models. I'm currently running a 72/140 and the basic question is would this represent a worthwhile swap?

They are being sold together so I could not split, and as my CD was going to be the next upgrade (Planet at present) perhaps change would be better focused here?

I would go and dem if I had a car but someone kindly decided to remove it for a bit of joy-riding last week. I'll go and make the dreaded public transport effort if its felt that it would be worth listening to

Cheers for any thoughts

Martin

You should be able to get a cheap 250 out of that after some selling-on. Eventually you want to arrive at 72/Hi/250(recapped).
Get the serial nos. to check the age with Naim.

It's no longer necessary to check the serial numbers with Naim, you can have a look at the Naim Audio main website under
products --> product histories --> serial numbers. There you'll find all the necessary information.

Ciao!

Willem

P.S. As for the swap, I wouldn't do it. I would keep the NAC 72 + NAP 140 and look for a used CDI or CD2. Next step would be a Hi-cap.

Depends how it would fit your needs/upgrade plans. You could even add a pair of speakers to the system. wink Don't do it if you would have to put off the CD upgrade for a long time. Do you need the extra power?

Speakers? Bugger I knew I'd forgotten something! No i probably don't need the extra power but it would be nice! I thought that it might be a good idea if it would be an upgrade as it would be self financing - new for old type thing!

Having given all my old kit to my brother he has decided to upgrade now. We went a deming and I got a sharp lesson on the source first issue!

He wanted to keep the speakers I'd given him these are orginal Castle Richmonds circa 1974 I'd loved the way they sounded with acoustic music but felt they were lacking in the bass with some of my other music. So he tried a few things out and ended up with a 3.5 and a new rega brio - my word they suddenly sprang to life, I think the guys in the shop where shocked "there singing now!" was the comment.

So I now have a smug brother mad who has thanked me for teaching him how not to do it, and learnt the hard way that my next saved for upgrade will be the source!

If however I can improve the amps for little outlay then I can do them as well big grin

Bargin is a very subjective term, I wouldn't pay five hundred quid for an ancient transformer which when we get down to brass tack is all an amp is.

garyi, Many prefer the 'ancient transformer' kit, me included.

I think DaveyP must be right - the absolute minimum dealer price for that lot would normally be about £850.

Do a Sceptic: ask them to service it all, keep the 250 as a worthwhile upgrade to a 140 (just); flog the 140, Snaps and the 32.5 for about £600, then get yourself an s/h Hi-Cap for £400 and buy yourself a load of Beers/Champagne/Vodka to celebrate your achievements.

I'm gonna go and listen to the stuff if they have still got it in. If I don't think its for me I'll let you guys know more about it - condition etc
over the weekend
