Question for the Power Gurus

Posted by: Simon Jenkins on 07 February 2003

As the title says, one for the resident electric warriors.

Are there any likely detrimental effects of running Naim kit with no earth (apart from the increased chance of electric shock).

Only ask, as I only have 4 sockets in the whole house with earth connections, two in the kitchen and two in the utility room, and my hi-fi resides in neither place.

Very curious.

Patrick,

The joys of living on the continent. Most electrical appliances over here don't have earth at all, except for those designed to be used near water.

In fact, a lot of UK appliances don't have earth either. Found this out when changing a lot of our plugs when we moved. They may have an earth pin, but the cable only has live and neutral wires.

The other "nice" thing over here is no fuses either.

After being used to the UK's belt and braces safety approach, it's a little strange.

likely is the word! to overcome this, when connecting your system to a non-earthed socket with a power bar, try this: connect the ground and earth lead of the power bar, so you don't have a floating earth.
