Canon printer/scanner on an iMac

Posted by: BigH47 on 06 October 2009

I use a Canon Mp500 via bluetooth on the Mac (slow but sufficient), I need to scan some photographs and that is where it goes pear shaped.
I plug the printer cable into the mac and P/Sanner says it is connected, if I try to use the scanner software it says it can't see the scanner and shuts the driver down.
I've loaded the latest software.
How does one know the mac is using what driver ?
These .dmg thingies what are they?
If you put them in the trash are they uninstalled?
If not how does one uninstall?

Not sure how you tell which driver is in use, you may be able to find out under printer setup, you should find this under system preferences. Another place you could look is 'about this mac' from menu bar, select more and it should tell you which software / drivers are installed.

A .dmg thingie is a virtual disk, if you double click on the .dmg file it will mount it on the desktop. You will then see a finder window which you can drag files from or a program which needs to be run to install the software.

If you drag the mounted icon from desktop to trash it will unmount the virtual drive.
If you drag the .dmg file to the trash it will delete the .dmg file.
Neither will uninstall the software if it has been installed.

To uninstall sometimes running the install program again detects that it is installed and will ask if you want to remove it otherwise it will just overwrite / update what is already there. Another way is to just drag the installed files to the trash, there is usually a log file created which tells you what is installed and where.

I suspect the underling problem is that even with the cable connected it is still trying to use bluetooth. Once again you should be able to sort this out in printer preferences under system preferences.

Apologies if there are a few errors in names etc but I am at work and have to use a PC Frown so not sat in front the mac to verify.

Thanks Graham, I think I qualify under the little knowledge is dangerous heading.
It would appear the printer can be "bluetoothed" but the scanner has to be cable connected. I am assuming Mac does support this combo printer.
I'll investigate further.

Just looked on Apple list of supported printers / drivers. If you are running SL (OSX 10.6) then the driver (supplied by canon) only supports printing.
For OSX 10.5 and not being able to scan there is a link to the canon website for an updated driver.
You can find all this on Apple website under support / Mac OS.

That sorts that then I'm running 10.6. Back to connecting it to the PC then.

Try launching image capture from the applications folder, this should pick up the scanner.

Any updates and software installs for mac will typically come in DMG format so it might be worth for the future learning how to use them.

Image capture just says no cameras or scanners connected. Should that not see the built in camera?
It will be easier for me to carry the printer and use the PC.

When I did the download thing for my Epson, there was a how to guide. iirc I had to trash the existing driver and then relaunch, the new driver then picked up and everything has worked fine since.

Update
sorry!

I didn't delete the driver I had to delete the device (printer). Close, relaunch the print utility and reinstall the printer. Then, it worked with the new driver.
