Music to reduce you to tears

Posted by: Dungassin on 21 June 2010

Just finished watching Buffy The Vampire episode "Passion". O Soave Fanciulla (Puccini) used to very good effect. Now off to play the whole of La Boheme. SWMBO disapproving of this, because she says it ALWAYS reduces me to tears, and threatening to confiscate it.

Got me thinking about music which produces strong emotional responses.

Last movement of Beethoven Symphony 9 when you get to "Seid umschlungen" does it to me as well.

... anything by Take That or Spice Girls!

I think I might have misinterpreted the question though. :-)

I think you're all deliberately misunderstanding my point. Smile

I meant music that is so beautiful it brings tears to your eyes.

Think of things like the Marche Funebre from Beethoven Symphony 3, Liebestod from Tristan Und Isolde etc etc.

You're right. I'll get it moved. Smile

Hi Dungassin, do you mind if I turn this thread into a Buffy love fest? Smile

Years ago, Buffy was on telly when I got in from work, and I would often watch it while I had my tea. If I'm honest I thought it was decent eye candy, but nothing more.

Then I saw the episode "Halloween", and thought, "Hmmm, clever idea, witty execution".
Then I saw "Lie to Me" and was surprised by the emotional depth with which it tackled some very dark material.
Then I saw "Surpise"/"Innocence" and began to realise just how good the show was.
Then I saw "Passion", was completely blown away, and was hooked for life.

I still watch the series on DVD, in more or less constant rotation. It's my favourite TV show of all time.

Anyway, back to your question, Christophe Beck's "Sacrifice" theme at the end of the Buffy season 5 finale gets me every time - the combination of music, cinematography, and Buffy's last words to her "sister", Dawn is incredibly moving. At the opposite extreme, the complete *absence* of incidental music in the "The Body" is extremely powerful, and a vital element of that episode's unflinching take on the death of a loved one.

In non-Buffy world, the first piece of music that comes to mind is Bach's Goldberg Variations - especially the moment when the Aria is restated at the end, and you realise that you're home after a long journey.

Regards
Nigel

Do what you like, but I've asked Richard to move the thread to music, so you might want to start a different thread in this particular forum. Smile

Currently rewatching Buffy for the 4th time. As with the previous run-through it started because I wanted something I was familiar with so I could watch with the sound almost off and subtitles on so as not to wake up a grandchild (this time it was my 2yr old granddaughter) - I was, of course, escaping from "Big Brother" - god I hate reality TV ...

Season 1 Buffy not really that good, although it does have a certain charm. Really starts to take off about half-way through Season 2.

I'll probably watch Angel again when I've finished Buffy.

65. ARIA (BASS) [from JS Bach's Saint Matthew Passion - Part Two, towards the end]

Mache dich, mein Herze, rein,
ich will Jesum selbst begraben.
Denn er soll nunmehr in mir für und für
seine süße Ruhe haben.
Welt, geh aus, laß Jesum ein!

Purify yourself, my heart,
I myself will bury Jesus.
For he shall henceforth evermore
sweetly take his rest in me.
World, get out, let Jesus in!

Probably my favourite piece of Music, but its emotional sweep, seeming simplicity, devastating power [nothing to do with the volume of sound] makes it one of the few pieces of music that actually reduce me to tears on times - even if not I can think of no more touching piece on the emotional level.

Yes, and all the more so knowing the back story behind the song, giving up her daughter for adoption.

And just one of many of Joni's songs that does it to me.

No tears perhaps but these make me feel sad.

Adagio in G minor by Albinoni, arranged by Giazotto. Apparently this is entirely a modern composition but is still beautifully sad to my ears.

Don Mclean, Vincent. Just an indescribably beautiful song, memories of late teens and lost love.

Mountain, For Yasgur's Farm. Dumped in February 1972 by my first serious girlfriend the weekend I bought Mountain Climbing.

The Carpenters, Close to you. My first and only true love was a distant cousin in New York. This was her favourite song. I'm now back in touch with her so it means more to me now than ever.

I've always had a real lump in the throat from Kirsty MacColl 'Days'. If I'd played it last year when my wife was ill I'd have been gone....

'The Host of Seraphim' from 'The Serpent's Egg' by Dead Can Dance is something that moves to tears in a positive way.

Lisa Gerrard, one half of the band is perhaps better known for her soundtracks work like 'Gladiator' these days, but Dead Can Dance, where she partnered Brendan Perry were an amazing band.

On the other topic, we should definitely have a Buffy/Joss Wheedon thread, I presume that Home Theatre would be the best place for it.

Funnily enough, I'm listening to this ATM. Quite beautiful. Smile

Earlier this afternoon I listened to John Williams' sublime "Saving Private Ryan". Heard that CD before I saw the film. Works beautifully just as music.

If you haven't done so already, I'll start it. I suspect Padded Cell might be better than Home Theatre, though. Winker

Joni's 'A case of you' sung by Diana Krall, an extra track on her 'Live in Paris' CD. The yearning is palpable.
And I'm with you on Gorecki's 3rd. And I can only just listen to one of Canteloup's Chants d'Auvergne, 'Bailero', since a very dear friend had it sung at his funeral. A live solo voice rising to fill the small chapel.......

Green And Grey - New Model Army

Cantus In Memory Of Benjamin Britten - Arvo Part (I first heard it coming out of a shop whilst walking through Brighton many years ago and was reduced to tears immediately. I went straight in and bought it.)
