Is there an equivalent law regarding the illegal use of the telephone system to obtain money?

Just curious - given the effectiveness of the US Law to be able to get hold of potentially guilty people by doing them for a relatively innocently sounding law -
I query whether the UK has a similar legislation that would cause organisations to improve the thoroughness in their processes.
