Squeezebox with Foobar or Other Media Players
Posted by: pcstockton on 23 January 2010
I looked on the Logitech site, I looked on Hydrogen Audio, and other places.
I cannot seem to find if it is possible to use Foobar with a Squeezebox? Must I use the Squeezebox server?
thanks in advance.

Hi pc,
I have a couple of SB3s - and am pretty sure they are effectively locked into the squeezebox server...
Personally I do really like them for fast and easy access for non-critical listening, and the BBCiplayer is great.
However to consider replacing my elderly CD2 (a possibility I considered several times) I think is regretfully far beyond the SB3s capability.
I've tried low-cost modding of one of my SB3s - following schemes quite persuasively presented on various other websites, but typically following an initially impressive few minutes I always slowly realize that an extra thrill on the roundabouts is accompanied by a horrid unravelling on the swings...
...I've ended up undoing the mods as far as possible!!!
Hope this helps!
Chris

Chris,
Are you going to check out the SB Touch? Or are you past that?

Hi Patrick,
it is possible to use the Squeezebox with any media-player. However it does not avoid the Squeezebox server. In short; there is a plugin that makes makes the Squeezebox act similar to an external soundcard.
I would say that for all but very specialised cases, it is probably not a good solution. Do ask if it sounds interesting though.

Hi pc,
I think the Touch looks really interesting with reports of improved DAC section, better digital output and 96/24 support, all sounding like very sensible and desirable upgrades...
Based on this I've been planning the sale of one of my SB3's (the unmodded one) and even the potential sale of the Beresford DAC if the Touch DAC proved good enough...
On the downside are my findings of what happens when I've modded the SB3, alongside reports that the NAIM DAC doesn't give inspiring results when fed by the SB3 - implying that the modest origins of the Logitech low-end lineup may not live up to my expectations...
...and now I find I'm now being swayed by the impending UnitiQute. This, although much more expensive, should be better all round than a Touch based solution. Also being a NAIM product it may even equal my CD2 - the release of which would help a lot with funding!
Also the possibility of a stripped Qute (a version without an amp section) has me deciding to hold off for a while, to see just what will come out later this year...
This stimulates deep, nagging, concerns about just how good my rips are! (Optiarc dvd writer + EAC)... After all, even if you aren't paranoid, it doesnt mean they aren't out to get you
...I guess my dream setup would be HDX/DAC/power supplies - but this would have to be when my pension plan pays out (SWMBO manages our lottery fund 'investment portfolio' - so even a big payout would require careful negotiation to secure funding)...
Very Best regards!!!
Chris

Well I thought UniQute is NOT gapless? For me this rules it out...
I am also considering the Squeezebox Touch...

This is interesting to me. I would like a GUI for times when my iPhone/Touch is being used for other things. The GUI for the Slimserver is a joke. Basically it is an interface exactly like using the Touch.
I thought i remembered a different "iTunes-like" GUI that the Slimserver had? Now it is simply a server without a real UI.
Either way, I would like to continue using Foobar as my controller/GUI if possible. IF this does not allow for bit perfection, or doesn't sound good, I will look down other avenues.
i like Foobar for re-tagging, making playlists, organizing, etc....
Can anyone speak to Foobar ASIO output versus Slimserver. ANd the third option of Foobar to Slimserver (or is it the other way around).
Is the SB bit perfect?
Other than being able to out the PC in another room, is there any advantage SQ-wise to using the SB instead of Foobar>ASIO>M-Audio Transit>DAC?
thanks for helping me with this.
To get to the point, yes this is something i think I would want to do.

Patrick,
I would also give some thought to performance with SqueezeCentre. I purchased a QNAP NAS and decided to run my SC from the NAS rather than a PC. At he same time I started ripping my CDs to the NAS. At about 10,000 songs I started to notice serious delays when searching for songs using my iTouch with iPenq.
My NAS is of a reasonably spec so I was quite surprised. I suspect I may be able to fix with some tuning of the SC database parameters but I have yet to get around to it.
I have since started playing with Foobar and other players on a PC which works very well, the only problem being the PC noise.
I'll wait to see what reports are like on the Touch before trying again with SC.

Thanks for that heads up Jack.
I would say that lagging @ 10K songs is a huge deal breaker for me.
There is really no limit I have found with Foobar. No slow down or nay noticeable degrading of performance at well over 100K.

PC
The interface for Squeezebox Server that opens in a browser is a little like the itunes interface, it allows you to sort by year etc, is that what you are thinking of?
Best wishes

Kamera,
No, SqueezePlay (i think it was called) used to look like iTunes or Winamp, if memory serves.
It looked basically like any other media player.
Now the GUI looks like, and is sized like, the front of a SB.
