Questions on playing USB sticks with Naim DAC
Posted by: JYOW on 28 January 2010
Well while I am waiting for my HiFace I am mostly playing with my USB sticks. I have a couple of questions that some of you may know the answers to:
1. The DAC does not respond to <NEXT> after about 20 songs. I could go back but just not forward. I have not had enough time to experiment, is this a known limitation?
2. Is there anyway to use the remote to control <PREV> and <NETX>?

How many songs on the memory stick? The DAC will stop and you cannot use next at the end of the songs
When USB hardware is connected, the DAC will interrogate it to identify appropriate files and automatically begin to play the files sequentially starting with those found in the highest level directory. The DAC front panel input selection buttons will operate as previous, next, stop and play buttons. You can also use the numbers on the remote

Steven,
Can you please explain why the DAC lights cannot be switched off similar to the CD players and NACs? I prefer to switch off all units lights and it will look odd when just the DAC will have the lights on.
Since it has a remote control receiver, the NAC remote could be used to switch them off in the same way it is done on NACs.
If this is not available now, I hope it can be added with a firmware upgrade.

I understand that, there were about 100 tracks and it stopped allowing me to go <NEXT> at about the 20th. Could have something to do with corrupted track I will experiment.

It refuses to play if I have more than one directories. Does it support only one directory or tracks in the root directory?

Yes I know about the front panel buttons. But how does the remote buttons work? Does it work via the "pre" funtion of the remote? How would it know that when I press "1" I am not asking the remote to switch inputs on the pre? And how would it handle the 10th track and beyond?

Second that. My wife keeps nagging me to "turn off that machine" in the evenings.
And I would love for Naim to make use of that IR receiver. Right now the remote functions seems neither here nor there.

Hi,
I am also very interested in some clue about switching off the DAC lights ...just like the rest of my NAIM system.
I "feel" the music very differently in the absolute dark.....(Yes I know...the doctor is on his way...)

Sorry there is no way to switch off the DAC lights
1 to 6 on a Narcom controls the 6 inputs on a Naim pre amp, then 7,8,9 and 0 on a Narcom will select the DAC inputs
When a USB is inserted then the front panel buttons on the DAC give previous, next, stop and play

As we already control it trough the "pre" config on the remote, would not it be possible to switch off lights of BOTH DAC and PRE when "disp" switch activated ?
A future change ?

No problems playing more than 20 songs with my Naim DAC via USB stick, but UNFORTUNATELY USB sticks do sound different... Take a look at the other thread about this topic... No Joke!

Yes, please Naim. After all I think this might just be a software tweek.

Besides all the questions/request for remote controllability, playing from USB stick is very flaky, sometimes take a few inserts to get the stick recognized (tried different sticks, Imation/Kingston..).
Most annoying of all, if I put files in more than one directories, it will NOT play. So there is just no way I can organize by albums, for instance.
Any advice from base camp? Is this the right venue to ask support questions?

Is it just WAV files that can be played via memory stick on USB?
Also, would be nice to turn DAC lights off from remote. Seems strange that pre/CD can be switched off and not the DAC. Could a software tweek resolve this?

Gee, if the lights can't be switched off on the DAC, this is a serious oversight, IMHO. What were they thinking? Software may not be able to address this.

It should be possible to resolve the DAC lights issue with software. All the lights in question - Sync,HD and the illuminated buttons are switched on or off under software control as part of the normal operation. Getting all of them to switch off should be equally possible.

Being new to Naim, how would this be achieved? Does said unit get sent back to Naim, Dealer upgrade or can this be carried out by owner?
Posted on: 07 February 2010 by DaveBk
Software upgrades tend to be done by the dealers - no details on the DAC, but the usual method would be to have a specially named file on a USB stick that the DAC knows to look for. If it finds the file it will load it and reprogram the flash memory.
