HDMI Cables
Posted by: Wazza69 on 01 July 2009
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has noticed a difference in the picture quality from HDMI cables? I know it shouldn't make any difference but I bought a cheap one from ebay and it is clearly inferior to the one I use already on my upscaling DVD player. Its really night and day. Could be the screening?
Thanks

Why shouldn't it make any difference.....?

Yes it definitely makes a difference.
I have settled for the Chord Company cables. They are clearly superior on a std defintition CRT tv. A big step up from the giveaway cables and definitely better to the "monster" crap stuff touted as high quality by the supermarket stores here.

HDMI is digital, so a stream of I's and O's so theoretically it should be the same for all cables surely?

Are you sure you are not confusing HDMI and SCART?
You talk about std def CRT which would not use HDMI.

We have observed that you will get different effects depending on the nature of the cables. I find the Chords to be sensibly priced for the performance you get. Going down in price to another (unnamed on purpose) manufacturer at about half the price, the results are oversaturated colours, solarisation, lack of definition in dark scenes and movement artefacts.
Price isn't the only indicator though. Far more expensive cables have also had different results varying from almost nothing to something close to substantial.
Then again, my sister was using some freebie cheapo HDMI cables and they were only a little worse than the Chords, so go figure...!
