New Naim Subwoofer
Posted by: Paul B on 17 May 2003
A number of comments have now made reference to a Naim subwoofer now in development. I am rather surprised at this - if it is true - as I had thought Naim's approach to subwoofers was simply that if you really want deep bass, weight and scale, you should buy DBLs (or perphaps NBLs).
If the development of a subwoofer is true, and if it is to be an addition to the DBLs, the subwoofer would indeed have to be a monster! If it is intended for the SL2s (more likely), then the cost of the additional subwoofer would put the total price of the SL2s + subwoofer well above NBLs (I would think). And if the merits of the mid/treble of the SL2 are so good (which on all accounts they are), why not build a new DBL with a bass driver of equal size to that of the old but with the new isolated tweeter of the SL2s?
So, is it true? Is a subwoofer in the works?

J.N....That Pilgrimage by Wishbone Ash lying on the floor? Haven't heard that for 30 years. Is it worth listening to still?

Well spotted!
I think 'Pilgrimage' is good but patchy. 'Argus' is the gem, without a duff track. I've just ordered a Japanese copy of the remastered version (which is pretty good anyway, and has bonus tracks)
I saw them live about a month ago. Andy Powell is the only original member left and the old classics went down a storm.
Pretty lukewarm response to the stuff on the latest album, though - I wouldn't bother with that.

I don't think it's official but a good friend tells me that Naim are making an AV sub to complete the set.
Speculation, heresay, rumour or fact?

I just received the new Spring 2003 News Letter. There is a picture of a sub (looks like the front of the ALLAE top box). No info, no name, just a picture.....
Read all the info on AV systems in said newsletter, and you'll read that as part of the system, a Sub woofer IS part of one of the systems.......
Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

Yes!
The latest newsletter is available for download from the main site, and yes, there it is, called just: active.
Looks to be a medium size box with no sign of a port anywhere, so maybe an isobarik sub..... things are getting interesting

Cheers,
John..

are we all reading a little too much into this? Tom, of all people, you should know what "active" means.

So is it a Naim sub called Active or any old sub as long as it's active?
If you have a read of the av2 manual it says to use "either an active sub or a passive sub with a mono amp". As they're building a 'recommended' system to a price then an active sub is the obvious choice.

So it's an active sub called Active.
Richard, put us out of our misery and give us the details.
Tom
at activesbl . plus . com
so what do you need a sub for anyway??? If you want more bass get yourself some DBLs

Now those I'd like to hear active - anyone want to lend me a couple of 500s?

Hmmm, maybe I'm just lucky, or have a great room or something, as my SBL's do SUPERB bass, articulation, extension, timing, detail, timbre, it's all there - no complaints, BUT would still love to have something that will still do true infrasonics for HT, and the odd Pipe Organ blow the neighbours away session.
DBL's of course would be even nicer, but in my lounge, I'd have to sit outside to listen to the speakers,
Cheers
