If you haven't heard about it its 46 Songs recorded in the US, UK and Ireland all very folky in style (as you might imagine) with different artists singing their favourite sea faring-related songs and ballads from a list of 400+ put together by the producer. tracklist as follows.....

Foul language and great songs abound in what must be the best line up of artists singing previously unreleased songs ever put together.

Highly recommended me hearties.

It is, with few notable exceptions, unadulterated crap.

Do not judge shanties (not very many of these are shanties btw) or the singing of them by this abomination.

So you've got it then have you Nigel? I assume not as many of them are shanties (not that that matters) and there are some pretty good songs here too. People like you are what makes me come back to this place less and less Roll Eyes

Can you point out the notable exceptions for me so I can be as open minded as you as to what is good music and what isn't. What songs here do you particularly dislike and why? I'd honestly be interested to know.

(Sweary insult deleted so as not to lower myself to your level)

Jonathan

PS Anyone with any intelligence heard this disc yet. I think its great.

Yes, I have it.

You think it's great.

Enjoy.

I heard it once and thought somne was good - Richard Thompson and Lou Reed obviously and some of it was appallingly - Brian Ferry and Sting were predictably terrible. Overall it sounded OK but I wouldn't want to buy it or hear it again.

There are 6 shanties (or "chanteys"), 21 "sea songs" and 16 "other" songs.

Have you really had time to go through a 43 song tracklist of a CD you class as "unadulterated crap", categorising the songs into 3 (generally overlapping) categories just to rain on the parade of someone on an internet chatroom who actually likes it.

I'd laugh if you weren't so pathetic.

I borrowed a copy. I thought it was a desperately mixed bag, too few highlights to be worth my money I'm afraid.

Having attracted so many high profile artists I guess they could not bear to edit out the tracks that did not work.

If you like a sort of gritty modern folk sound then I can heartily recommend Isobel Campbell/Mark Lanegan 'Ballad Of The Broken Seas'. One of the albums of 2006 in my book.

I consider it my duty to bring some balance to the argument. I would not want people running off and buying this on your recommendation alone. I have no problem with your liking it btw.

Since I know quite a bit about folk music, having been involved with it for over 25 years, I had the incentive, time and fortitude to review the tracks. The 3 categories I chose are not overlapping at all.

If you like I could also tell you which 23 tracks I though had some merit, I could also tell you which 13 I liked and the one which I thought the best - but what would be the point?

As I said before, enjoy your purchase and Happy New Year to you.

- i also have listened to it and yes it is a really poor release not worth the plastic pressed onto- it is simply cashing in on the Pirates of Caribbean phenomena. These are not "unreleased songs" as they are in most instances well known, the versions by the artists may be unreleased.
Really disappointed as the idea sounded so good.
You could not even edit down to a decent single Cd.

Lets beg to differ then lads. I've heard some absolute crap in recent months and was pleasantly surprised at this one. I really don't think this set has anything so bad that it should evoke such hatred but each to his own I suppose.

If we don't class folk songs as unreleased anymore there's many a well respected Folk group who we'll have to class as a cover band from now on.

Oh....and Nigel maybe you should have used the phrase "adulterated crap" by the sounds of it as you now seem to be implying you though >50% of the songs had merit Winker

My last word on the matter.
