Please help with my musical education!

Hi, i am a child of the 80s and so seemed to miss out on a lot of good, female vocalists (too busy with electronica!). I listen to Katie Melua, Norah Jones and Bic Runga a lot now to relax but would love to discover other good female vocalists. What would people recommend? Joni Mitchell??

Linda Thompson, which has the advantage of Richard Thompson if you listen to the collaboration albums instead of just her solo ones. Can be a bit dark!

Espers delightful singing by Meg Baird
This band could appeal to Pink Floyd fans, (ROFT please take note! : )
...it's sort of folky, gothy and psychedelically heavy at times, but in the main it's chilled out beautiful in a delicate kind of way. Espers, and Espers 2 albums are available from playdotcom at £3.99 each, The Weed Tree is much dearer for some reason. All three albums are superb imho.

This is my favourite Christine Collister album. It's rare now so a bit expensive. Visit Christine's web site here for other recording and video's.

Hi Keleigh,

My current favourites are:

Carla Bruni: Quelq'un m'a dit (listen to sample)
Keren Ann: la biographie de Luka Phillipsen
They kind of sing/whisper in French....

I am sure you've listened to Morcheeba already. Charango is one of the albums I prefer from her.

Others you may want to try:
Laurie Anderson: Strange Angels
Diana Krall (too obvious?): The Girl in the Other Room

Another one I like (but I don't have any of her albums yet) is: Feist: The reminder (The Reminder)

Enjoy,
Ale

Mary Black. She's a bit folky, but I don't normally like folk and I think her voice makes up for it. No Frontiers is my favourite album.

Mary Black is superb and No Frontiers is my favourite album by her too - or is it Babes In The Wood?

Yep - Babes in the Wood is good, too, but I really like the track "Columbus".

What a fantastic array of singers! But if you're a bit folky, try Judy Collins, Pentangle with Jaqui McShee and best of all, Steeleye Span with Maddy Prior.

I've just discovered Jaymay, sample her MySpace.

Her album Autumn Fallin is really impressive, especially as she plays most of the instruments and produced it as well.

Just listened to some of her songs Denis. Not bad at all. If you like her try Anais Mitchell's Hymns for the Exiled brilliant album. Slightly quirky voice.

Thanks Nymph and noted - I'll investigate.

Two more from me

This a beautiful Celtic folk album - please click here to hear

and the absolutely superb Waking the Witch

Indie-folk at its best - Boys from the Abattoir - please click here to hear - different version from the cuts of the album (less polished).

If you fancy something jazzy but a little more modern, try Little Dragon featuring the vocalist from Koop - Yuki Nagano I think. I liked it a lot. Smile

Hi ewemon,

Just trying her MySpace now, sounds interesting. Let you know what I think soon.

BTW, I'll try and arrange a trip up north and meet up again sometime this year. Just need to find the right gig.

I have a few additions that I am surprised no one mentioned -

K.D. Lang - a newish one called 49th Parallel is stunning

Eva Cassidy - Songbird

Rilo Kiley (Band)

Maria McKee (Lone Justice)

The Story (Jonatha Brooke and Jennifer Kimball - friends but they really are great)

Angela McCluskey (a fairly unknown NYC based favorite)

... and not forgetting the late, great, Karen Carpenter!

Amy McDonald.

This is my best album of the new century so far!

Excellent singer / song writer who's only 20 and has a great future me thinks.

I've seen her live and while this is a great album I don't think it quite does justice to her voice. It's her debut album and I get the impression it's a rather cheap production as she was unknown when released.

But it's fantastic and you must buy it immediately !!!

Since nobody is recommending Ernestine Anderson . . . I will.
"When the Sun Goes Down" mainly, for the best mixture of jazz and blues I know . . . no one is playng virtuoso part, but perhaps just because of that the outcome is really grooving, smooth, extremely emotional, IMOAW.
Enjoy

I don't think Thea Gilmore has been mentioned yet. I've only heard Rules for Jokers which is excellent and well recorded too. Her other albums such as Avalanche are also well regarded.

Jo Mango sounds really great too - she's an indie folk, multi-instrumental singer-songwriter from Glasgow - Jo's mySpace area is here

Jo Mango is uniquely gifted, as a musician and as a performer. She writes the most beautiful songs and her sense of fun in life has made this last year that I have been on the road with her a luminous one. Kind, original, musical and clever, I know Jo will go far. - Vashti Bunyan
