Dear Todd,

You may find those EMI Kubelic VPO Mozart recordings more easily in the USA than here in UK. My Seraphim issue appears to be made in USA!

I have been known to buy a concerto recording for the coupling of an overture before now, so I will still investigate the Requiem from Krips.

I was really struggling to remember what of Mozart I had conducted by Joseph Krips, and it came to me!

Edwin Fischer recorded the Piano Concerto in C [25] with the Philharmonia in 1946 for HMV in what I think is the most perfect recorded performance, capturing the grace and grandeur of the work, and Krips is ever bit as wonderful as his [at the time far more famous] soloist!

On that showing Krips should have had a much higher profile career, but as Boult wryly observed, the German speaking world wanted Boehm, Karajan, and Furtwangler back - the musical Nazis as Boult refered to them in his correspondence with the BBC music department while on secondment in 1945/6 in Vienna, where he was cheif conductor of the Philharmonic concerts for a season. Nowadays few people would recall Boult's fruitful relationship with the VPO from 1934 on, and the fact that he gave many Viennese premieres of Brtitish works with the Philharmonic, and made several recordings with them in rather varied [non-Viennese] repertoire, including the Planets.

But back to Krips, Boult described him as one of the handful of truly great conductors active anywhere in the world at the end of the Second War. He was very disappointed to see Krips eased out of a rapidly forming bond with the VPO during Boult's short period of control in matters musical there, considering the quality that Krips was getting from the great but severely depleted orchestra ...

Quite a compliment from a rather astute judge of other's abilities.

George,

You've inspired me to dig out 36 and 38 - Mackerras and Prague SO 1986 (Telarc). I'd forgotten how much I liked this music. Your opinion of the performance?

Dear Winky,

I have the first three CDs in the MacKerras Telarc series, and really like them, though this is very early Mozart. Tam played some Mozart when I visited him in the Spring - I think the 39 in E Flat - from Mackerras, and honestly it was absolutlely superb, but I am not sure it was on the Telarc series. The conclusion I draw is that MacKerras is a great master in Mozart and that you are unlikely to find a duff performance on recordings from him!

From this thread it has become clear to me that I shouldn get the Krips set [on Decca] and get some more from MacKerras.

The Mozart I played George was from Mackerras's more recent SCO recordings which have been mentioned several times. If memory serves we listened to the stunning first movement of the Prauge, which with all repeats, I've only heard more thrillingly in several live performances from the same team.

As mentioned above, the Telarc set is great though.

regards, Tam
