original Naim LS-plugs
Posted by: Alco on 16 August 2002
Hi Y'all,
At this moment I use some goldplated banana's at the end of my Nait-2.
(German brand called Monitor PC)
Now, they do fit but it seems like every kinda banana plug I try, doesn't really fit tight.
They're more or less 'hangin in' there.
Should I just let it hang in there, or get me some original Naim 'square' plugs
and would this be an audible improvement over these goldplated banana's. ??
btw:Do Naim dealers sell these plugs at all ?
(I mean I've only seen them included when ya buy a new Naim pre or integreted amp)
Greetings,
Alco

Yes, yes, and yes. Get the Naim banannas. They will be an audible improvement over your O.G.'d** girlie-man biker style banannas*** (although somewhat more costly than the crap at Maplins - you gets what you pays for).
Failing that, RS banannas are very good also.
Happy hunting!

Alco,
I got some from Naim direct about 3 yrs ago - they charged me around £10 for the pair. Sad to say, I've tried Rega bananas, QED "Airlock" and Naim's own - couldn't tell any fecking difference sound-wise but the Rega's were the tightest fit!

Thanx Jonas for the pic,
Now,I must say those pins look quite a lot like the ones coming out of the plastic Naim plugs.
I think my (former)Naim dealer used them on his Naim gear some years ago, and I rememeber they were very cheap.
I'll look around to see if I can find any.
Thanx Y'all,
Greetings,
Alco

Check the spacing on the Naim plugs - I'm not convinced they will fit Kans.

Hi Kan man
Don't worry, I have some (soldered) plugs that fit perfectly tight into my Kan's.
So, I only need some for my Nait.

The Naim plugs don't cost the world either. My dealer charged me EUR 9 for each set of two, IIRC. And if spacing doesn't fit you're equipment, take off the plastic covers.

Hi Edo,
The Naim plugs will suit my Nait-2 amp fine.
I think I'll just go for the Naim plugs.
Thanx

Thanx, I think I'll connect 'em to my Kan's then.
btw: This afternoon I visited a Naim dealer in another town. I asked the young salesman(boy) if he had some of these original Naim plugs. He never even heard of 'em, so he called the owner of the store who went for a little walk. When he came back he asked me to follow him to the (Naim)listening room. Wow! For a moment I felt like a kid in a toy store!
We had a little chat and the owner gave me the original Naim banana-plugs for free. "Service of the house" he said. And I've never visited the store before! Now, that's what I call service!

BTW: before I forget....
To my surprise, also this store was not using Naca-5 for their naim goodies!
They use some big, black monster cable and in their opinion it outperformes Naca5.
Now, this is the third Naim dealer in the north of Holland that's not using naca5 with Naim amps!
(and if I'm right, these are also the only Naim dealers in this area...)

Hi Edo,
The 3 dealers I'm talking about is
1. Rinsma HiFi (use his 'own' cable)
2. Art in Sound (use Kimber cable)
3. Musifoon (use Monster cable)
btw: I just soldered those square Naim bananas.
Man, I almost wished I never started messing with these damn plugs
When I soldered them and later wanted to connect them to the back of my Nait, it didn't fit!!!
These small 'flaps' or 'ears', whatever they are for, at both side of the plugs, were in eachoters way. They didn't fit in to eachother and they had to be cut and soldered off!
Otherwise they didn't fit into my Nait.
(see the drawing I just made!)
O,well. after some long, sweaty, pissing me of action with the soldering iron, the operation was a succes! Now they fit like a glove.

Alco,
somthing not right with your drawing.
IIRC, the Nait back panel is red, black, black, red.
Also, IIRC, the single bump should be positive (red) and the double is negative (black).
You should be left with two single bumps on the outside, and have cut off both (all four) of the double dumps.
Still, as long as the cable is wired up right (the strip down the outside of the cable goes to positive - red - on both channels), then it doesn't matter a rat's arse what bumps are on the plastic shround.
Still, I bet the best sound is to be had if the plastic boxes do not touch each other at all. If this not possible, probably best if they're removed altogether.
cheers, Martin

Hi Martin,
Thanx for the explanation. Way are Naim making things to hard when it could be so much easier!
Why not just mark the plastic blocks with a '+' and a '-' or 'R' and 'L' instead of these silly bumps on each side, which have to be cut off in the end, to make 'em fit!?

Yup, I know. The cable is connected correct though.
O,well it fits and sounds fine now, and all is forgiven and forgotten

Alco,
if you look carefully at the plugs, you will see that the positive side of the block is marked with 'POS'.

Duh.....
haha, I saw it, but... still.... why on those 'bumps' and not on the block itself ?
Imho, it's no use to to mark 'pos' on those bumps when you have to cut them of to make the plugs fit into a Naim amp.
(well, into a Nait-2 at least)
btw: Before I soldered the plugs I also tried 'em on my Kan's.
They fit so tight that I could hardly get 'em out again!

Alco
the bumps are very visual. When say, installing around the back of a rack, in the gloom... the bump is easy, and one doesn't have to READ for anything.

Obviously your Nait is too old, that's why the plugs won't fit out of the box. Same goes for my 250: different spacing, so I had to take off the plastic casing.
