Best Female singer of all time

Posted by: NB on 06 October 2002

Madonna has just been voted MTV's all time favorite singer, with Kylie voted second and Celine deon voted third.

Is this a fair reflection of the greatest female singers? or how can you compare modern day favorites with the greatest singers of say the sixties or seventies. Is it possible to compare the likes of Janis Joppelin and Joni Mitchell with Britney and whitney?

my vote would go to tori amos. she's got a fantastic voice but also earns extra points (in my mind) for being a great pianist and a consistantly good song-writer.

cheers

What, no Maria Callas? By far the biggest hair on the back of my neck standing up factor.

Turning all poppy: kd lang; Maddy Prior; Claire Torry ( the wailing wo-oh-oh bits on DSOTM ); Oleta Adams...

All good shouts.

Its interesting that no one has voted for Kylie and co. It takes real talent to stand the test of time. Apart from Madonna there is currently very little real talent around!

Sarah Brightman, Kate Bush, Grace Slick? Good pop singers no doubt. But surely you must have heard mention of Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. I understand their recordings are still available in some parts of the world, although, sadly, their music videos are hard to come by.

I have lots of CD's by female artists of all musical genres. It is difficult to compare across types of music, and also age of recording. A good case could be made for many of the names mentioned already in this thread to be "the best".

For me in second place comes Eva Cassidy.

However, first place goes to Bonnie Raitt. Her ability to sing rock, blues, or country shows her versatility. However, the sheer emotion she can portray in singing, or harmonising, slower songs is second to none in my opinion. She has "guested" on numerous albums by other artists, indicating the high regard she is held by her peers.

I assume Jazz and pop only.

For me, no contest, Ella smokes everyone else. Second choice would be Dusty Springfield. Can't think of anyone else that are close.

With the exception of Sarah Brightman (very sorry, Mick, sometimes I worry about you), I'm inclined to agree with most of the above. I would, however, like to add Alison Kraus to the list.

It has to be Billy, not great technically but she cannot be touched in terms of communication.

Anything from Emma Kirkby starting with her spell with the AAM. I know she may not have sold in the millions but she opened my eyes and ears to a type of music that I may not have ever considered following.

Mick Jagger, surely.

She's the one. Frankly, these kind of threads make me wince. Music is no sport. There is no way to name the best, not even the best 1000 female singers in the world. If you think so, go on but stop thinking that you know anything about music. A very angry Thorsten. Okay, now shoot me.

-you are part of a thread that makes you wince...
-you chose to read it
-Best anything is an opinion - we are not talking about a DIN standard of aesthetic or any other quality, it is fun
-Why should having an opinion stop anyone from knowing anything about music? Cannot follow that logic
-As Nietszche said, "That which does not kill us makes us stronger"
-Go and have a nice cup of tea and stop worrying!

no nice tea around. you're right. i am in a bad mood. not your fault. naming the best female singer in the world is still futile.
P.S. Have you ever heard Florence Foster Jenkins?

No, and it doesn't pretend to be. It's a reflection of the favouries of MTV watchers, and will take their songs, videos and (possibly most significantly) MTV playlisting into account as well as their ability to sing.

Pete.

p.s., Celine Dion walks into a pub, the barman says, "why the long face?", b-boom tsssss!

I had guessed where you are from....

As for nice tea - I was working with 533 Jaeger Battallion some years ago; our hosts kindly bought a huge urn of tea out to the exercise. Being Squaddies we poured milk into it. We found out the hard that milk does not mix with peppermint tea...found a use for the tea though; the area started to burn and we used it to douse the fire. Saved the embarrasment of having to say no to more of the dreadful stuff.

We stuck to coffee therafter
