Best Female singer of all time

Posted by: NB on 06 October 2002

Madonna has just been voted MTV's all time favorite singer, with Kylie voted second and Celine deon voted third.

Is this a fair reflection of the greatest female singers? or how can you compare modern day favorites with the greatest singers of say the sixties or seventies. Is it possible to compare the likes of Janis Joppelin and Joni Mitchell with Britney and whitney?

  • Toni Childs
  • Holly Cole
  • The singer for Romeo Void (what the heck was her name)
  • Marian Anderson
  • Christine McVie
As for Diana Krall, she reminds me of Annie Lennox - technically excellent, but cold. Would she be as popular if she weren't as attractive (noticing that her albums mimic pin-up calendars at times).

Thanks to those that have already mentioned:
  • Billie Holiday
  • Karen Carpenter
  • Eva Cassidy
  • Emmylou Harris
  • Patsy Cline
  • Elizabeth Frazer
  • Ella Fitzgerald
  • Sinead O'Connor
  • Janis Joplin
  • k d lang
  • Joni Mitchell
In many ways, I would agree that opera singers such as Bartoli and Schwartzkopf (sp?) should be thought of as the finest singers period, but I feel that many of the great singers listed here are great not not for being technically perfect, but rather for adding something to the music that's beyond singing the words perfectly.

Holly Cole and Toni Childs are great examples - listen to Holly's brilliant renditions of Tom Waits' masterpieces in Temptation, and Toni's Voice Of The Mother Earth in House Of Hope.

Cheers

Keith.

Tom

Good comment and that was why I started this topic. More to find out how people were going to define "best" and "all time".

It struck me that the MTV poll was full of the modern singers who had only been around for a few years. None of them able to sing but all of them able to sell records.

It also strikes me that none of today stars would have sold anything in the sixties, and seventies when there was no technology available to hide the fact that they cannot sing. You literally heard what they sang. Singers of this era recorded time and time again until they got it right. Todays singers sing it once and the rest is done in the studio. I find it interesting that very few of todays star both male or female can actually sing live.

In a way I am dissapointed in the way the music industry is going. Everything now is done to a formula defined by the record companies. There is very little talent out there at the moment.

Didn't singing take second place to visual appeal about the time the first video was seen on TOTP.

Now we have TaTu at number 1 but who was in the first ever video to be played on TOTP?

I had assumed we were talking sonically but either will do!!

If we are talking visually then Shakira comes to mind. Now she knows how to use her body Wink

But getting back to the music I heard a very good singer on Magic yesterday, Nora Jones.

Her first single is very enjoyable and she seems very talanted. I will go out and buy the album and I am sure it will be very enjoyable.
