Best Female singer of all time

Posted by: NB on 06 October 2002

Madonna has just been voted MTV's all time favorite singer, with Kylie voted second and Celine deon voted third.

Is this a fair reflection of the greatest female singers? or how can you compare modern day favorites with the greatest singers of say the sixties or seventies. Is it possible to compare the likes of Janis Joppelin and Joni Mitchell with Britney and whitney?

I have been listening to Maddona's Ray of light CD.

Maddona is one of the few singers that has been able to stand the test of time. Now she is in her forties and her life has changed her music has changed accordingly. Watching the "frozen" video on MTV shows how cleverly written her music is nowdays. None of the manufactured crap purely written to the record companies formula.

We could do with hearing more vocal talent these days.

Try this one for size - Becky Barksdale

Nick,

I guess they just wanted to give it that authentic 'club' sound, but Becky rocks the blues well and plays a mean guitar. Must be the influence of sharing a birthplace with Janis Joplin.

Nick,

I enjoyed "music" not one of her best albums but enjoyable and it makes its way on to my CD player every now and again. The single "Music" is the best track on the album, well written with a good beat to it. I also enjoyed "nobody's perfect" and "runnaway Lover". Her rendition of "American Pie" finished the album of, a little bit cheesy but I enjoyed it.

"Ray of Light" was excellent all the way through, tracks like "Ray of Light", "nothing really matters", "Ashanti" and frozen are all good trackswell written and produced and say alot about how Maddona has matured and grown through her life.

When I am in a softer mood I love listening to "something to remember" there is hardly a bad track on the album. I could sit and listen to this album anytime and enjoy every minute of it.

And then there is "the immaculate collection" the best of her early stuff, again very enjoyable, Its hard to say that she has realeased a bad album. "Erotica" was different but still enjoyable and the Bass lines makes my sistem work hard!!

NB - Ray of Light is fab. Makes me cry - but I think its 'cos I'm a new parent. It gets me like that - but what an album!!!!!. I'm no Madonna fan either!

Food for thought

I saw this in another place, lots of words, pictures and new names to ponder.

Rasher,

Thats what Madonna is good at reaching people who are not particularly fans of hers. The words on the "Ray of Light" Cd have so much meaning.

Roy

Far too many to choose from Wink

The weekends coming! Razz

Any recommendations for the weekend?

Never thought about this before. There are so many good singers out there. If I was pushed I would have to say that Janis Joplin would be taken to my desert island....

I was just listening to Pearl last night on vinyl. Amazing intesnity in her voice.

but I'd still vote for Sarah Vaughn, hard to beat a 5 octive range that she had.

Tammi Terrell, her voice makes you feel like you are in love, everyday!! On the otherhand if your feeling low, then Sarah Bettens the singer in K´s choice can explain your most inner thougths. But if you´re drunk and emotional Janis is queen!!

I am cheating this afternoon. I have the "best of woman" on my CD not just one great singer but loads.

Gloria Estefan, Dina Caroll, Aretha Franklin, Judie Tzuke, Stevie Nicks, the list is endless and all good singers.

Am I being spoilt this afternoon or what?

HIxy

Good call!

I saw her live at the Birmingham NEC one of the best live shows I have been to.

Fantastic voice, but I feel she has always been let down by the quality of the material she has been singing.

I wonder what she would be capable of with a better song writer?

Do the Dixie Chicks count, they make music that sells and they made a protest and suffered?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Dixie Chicks' lead singer Natalie Maines said she spoke against President George W. Bush and invasion of Iraq last month out of frustration and she regrets her choice of words but makes no apologies for thinking critically.

My partner was listening to Abba's "name of the game" last night and when you hear Agnetta sing on a decent system the quality of her voice shines through. She has a great range to her voice and such emotion.

Its just a pitty the music was so crap Wink
