Live Music in New York

All

My partner and I are visiting New York for a few days from next Friday and I was wondering if anybody could suggest a couple of interesting, small live music venues. Don't want too much noise and grunge but nothing too (musically) safe either. Maybe something in Greenwich Village (we're staying in SOHO)?

PS. Wonder if I'll get to the Groove Shoppe and have a go on the Fretless five string Fodera bass they have listed at $6k? Probably not a good idea.

Go to Cafe Wah? on Sunday night when nothing much else seems to be open. They will have a resident band and will stay open until about 4.00am, then there is a bar around the corner that'll still be open and will get you through to breakfast if you are up for it.

What style of music is played at these venues?

Cafe Wah? - One time I was there was a very competent house band with a drag queen doing the standards, and it was hilarious fantastic stuff. Real good fun. Other times, blues funk, stuff like that. The place is mostly famous for having a guitarist & his band as a house band who were later discovered and brought to England. That was Jimi Hendrix. It's a great place.

From the Knitting Factory website -
'Knitting Factory Entertainment has grown to encompass a diverse family of sounds, from the neo-psychedlic Shimmy Disc to the jazz standards of Knit Classics to the dance and acid jazz of Instinct Records.'

Lots of experimental jazz and stuff like that

The Village Vanguard is a must if jazz is what you desire. It's the jazz capital of the world!

CBGB's (and OMFUG) A legendary place. Worth visiting even if you don't go in. It's almost a shrine, like the Village Vanguard
