The subject says it all ? Any help for the dearly beloved to get a CD set. Must be sung in Russian.

My Dad has always rated this version and I think another version with the Kirov under Gergiev - couldn't find this on a cursory search but am sure it must be out there.

hi,
Thanks for the input Huwge. I'll check those out.
We have a very old LP recording on Russian LPs(!) which R. bought as a teenager home in Finland. They are from the Bolshoi Opera company conducted, we think, by M Rostropovich - her reading of Cyrillic is not what it once was. We can't really make western equivalents of the other names. Anyhow some of the 3 LPs are still in good shape and some are not - for the best of reasons - she played it a LOT. And I'm beginning to see why - some of the singing is magnificent - particularly the bass part.
So if we could track down this recording that would be great, otherwise we'll take the plunge on some recommendations.
cheers
Ian

I would try to have listen before you buy (possibly pop into MM Music who are very nice and helpful). I don't know the work, but have never really cared for anything I've heard from Levine (his Wagner is hopelessly slow and he doesn't carry that speed off in the way of, say, Knappertsbusch). For what it's worth, the penguine guide suggests Solit's reading.
If you don't mind vintage discs, there looks to be a rather interesting reading on the Naxos historical series, which would have the added bonus of being very cheap.
regards, Tam
