People who don't say Thank You on this Forum (HiFi Corner)

Posted by: JWM on 22 May 2010

This is not addressed to the majority on here who when they post a query acknowledge the answer(s), but to those who don't, the incidence of which does seem to have increased a bit lately.

You post a query, other Forum members spend time thinking about it and writing a considered reply. As it is our hobby, yes it is information gladly shared. But it is basic good manners to say Thank You when someone has spent time answering your query.

It's this sort of negative_energy that discourages some to post too.

JWM is one who takes a lot of trouble to impart experience to the forum. Its a shame his contribution can't be respected.

I agree. It's also nice to know what people end up doing, and whether one's advice had any bearing on the outcome. It's like those 'home or away?' housebuying programmes; I'm probably a bit sad, but I'd sometimes like to know whether they did move.

I think that sometimes I forget to explicitly say "thank you", but to all whom have taken the trouble to reply to a question, I'm very grateful :-)

In the part of London where I grew up its often used as term of endearment... you guys have a sense of humor yes?

Agreed. It's common courtesy to reply to answers, and say whether they are relevant and/or helpful. Either way thanks are in order for the time involved.

p.s. I note that positive-energy's original posting seems to have been deleted, and to him I would say swearing isn't clever, and I don't care if it's usual among your "friends". No, I don't regard it as "affectionate banter", just unnecessary rudeness. Perhaps I'm just showing my age in having this opinion, but on the rare occasions when I do swear, people take notice.

Seems like we have a class system in play here, or a complete lack of tolerance. Not sure which. Cockney's use the term 'now fuck off' a lot in a postive way. Depends on context. My post was not disrespectful and I resent you lot taking it that way. Shame that cant be respected here. Seems like BBC English only.

It isn't a cockney forum plus your location isn't stated so how was anyone to know. So go and get Donald Ducked yourself.

It has nothing to do with a class system or a lack of tolerance. This isn't a UK only forum. So BBC English or not, it is likely that your post could be construed by others as insulting.

In which case it has everything to do with tolerance and respect.

Well I preceded it with Thank You. and followed it with a Smile ....

And then explained myself a bit farther on. Sounds like a few here are just hunting for a punching bag..

Anyway, back on topic. I don't think that a failure to say thank you is necessarily disrespectful. In fact it can make following threads easier as checking an updated thread just to read someone saying thank you can be tiresome. I generally say thank you if I have been helped out here and am grateful for the help folks provide generally. And if someone doesn't thank me when I help them I do not automatically take it the wrong way.

If you are referring to me, you're assuming I am "upper class" or "upper middle class". In fact I was born in Wandsworth, London. My father was a welder. I was brought up mainly in Lancashire, went to state schools, and was taught to by my parents and grandparents (also working class) that bad language and needless profanity did not show that you were "clever". I have taught my own children the same rules, and, guess what? It means they a good impression and are doing well. You are guily of inverted snobbery, or perhaps just a victim of the apparent dumbing down of society in general.

My original intent was and remains "politeness costs nothing".

3 replies to go from a positive post to a negative one.

Not bad.

I don't think that four-letter words are appropriate on the forum.

There are plenty of alternative ways of expressing oneself - without risking offense to others.

This post is kind of useful English language lesson, for me. I know I need it, so... thank you all!

Well I apologize to anyone who has taken offense. It was a light hearted comment on my part that was not intended to offend.

For all the wonderful advice anyone has given me on the Forum, I thank you. Some real nice folk here Smile

Just one final comment.
Being a little "anal" I have searched Naim Forums for the word "fuck". It has occurred only 7 times since 1st March, and 2 of those were either song title/lyric or group name. A couple of the others look as if the poster was inebriated at the time.

Thus we may draw the conclusion that swearing on Naim forums is considered inappropriate. On other forums, pubs etc, possibly OK, but not here.
