Roll on 1 July 2007

Some of you may be spitting tacks, "infringement of civil liberties", but I just needed to say how delighted I AM about the smoking ban from 1 July 2007.
As a foretaste, I cannot tell you just how pleasant it was being in smoke-free pubs in Dublin.
Contrary to certain claims, those wanting to smoke at pubs will still be able to - it's just that from 01.07 they will have the choice that I (and the non-smoking majority of the British population) currently get if we want a smokefree drink at a pub - sit outside, rain, shine, wind or snow.

Goodness me, by not smoking, I have been able to buy a one year old XPS2, plus change.

If you smoke you stink. If you smoke you are also stupid. If you smoke in public you are also pig ignorant and selfish and you make us non-smokers stink too. You pollute yourself and you pollute those around you. The only female I have been out with who smoked I married. I married her on the promise that once married she would quit. She didnt quit so I divorced her. I think this is fair.
I think this filthy disgusting offensive habit should be outlawed and offenders shot. Lest anyone think me extreme I do of course advocate warning them first. I think this is fair.
Anyone who sells tobacco is a drug dealer. All dealers should be shot and their businesses and personal assets sold by the state and used to fund medical research and tree planting. I think this is fair.
If any offenders escape abroad (especially Poland)they should be tracked down and shot. Foreign countries who allow smoking should be invaded. No exceptions. Mo mercy. I think this is fair.
We have the smokers on the run now chaps and it's time to implement the next phase of Operation We Dont Want Your Filthy Stench Anymore. Faint heart never won fair land.![]()
I didn't realise you were such a liberal, Acad!

Thank goodness we still have some decent chaps left.

Just saw this point and of course we are now more liable to help kids die faster because we have driven smokers back into their own homes.
Don't get your point.
My children experience no smoke at home, no smoke on public transport, no smoke in shops, no smoke in restaurants, cinemas etc.
That can only be a good thing.
Any smoker who decides to pollute the lungs of their children have only got themselves to blame - nobody else. They are actively killing their children passively.
My children are safer.
As a non smoker I obviously agree with the new law but what we have also done is drive smokers back into their homes where they will end up smoking possibly more. If they have kids then it is them that will suffer in a home enviroment.
I know I did as my Father smoked Capstan Full Strength which contained the highest nicotine tar of any cigarette- ever and my Mother smoked as well as my 7 brothers. Most of you have no idea what it is to be in a house with 9 people smoking at once. Cut the air with a knife you needed a chain saw.
The point is we have cured one problem but given ourselves another for the future. Surely the answer would be to not sell cigarettes period. Remember that smoking amongst teenagers has risen and not decreased. BAT announced a rise in their Pre Tax profits from the UK this year from the sale of cigarettes.

Ewemon,
I think it is appalling that some people - tragically - will do what you say and choose to damage their children's health in this way.
To me, to knowingly or willingly harm the health of your children actually constitues a form of child abuse.
It would be naive to believe that they will not be smoking heavily at home anyway, public smoking ban or no.
But the terrible and regrettable situation that some people might exercise their 'personal freedom' by maintaining (or even increasing) their private smoking habit - even after being made fully aware of what it is doing to their children - is not an argument for not banning smoking in public places for the benefit of the public health.

Not if they are responsible parents. If they are not then they will smoke at home anyway.

Prasie from the praise worthy is praise indeed. My policies are as follows: Prospective parents must take an exam and be interviewed by a panel of decent chaps such as me and thee. If they fail once they can re-apply (I think thats fair)but they fail a second time they should be castrated/steralised as appropriate so as not to further contaminate the gene pool.
The lower socio-economic order should be disenfranchised (they are unlikely to notice anyway or care even)but will be allowed to continue voting on matters they are able to understand such as who gets thrown out of the jungle or Big Brother House etc. (I had thought to ban dross like junk tv but its better the masses stay in doors out of sight and out of mind)
All our former colonies must be returned to us including the USA and India. The colonies will be taxed in a fair and just manner by decent chaps from decent schools and any good university (either will do).
The National Anthem will be played in Cinemas and at the end of films and at 12 midnight when all TV stations will close for the night. The Loyal Toast to the Sovereign will be made standing up after dinner each night (although those whose loyalty is not in question such as me and thee will be allowed to remain seated)
Any other ideas?

Hi Fredrik,
Nothing potential about the harm caused by tobacco, hope you are luckier than those more seriously affected.
If I thought civil aviation was harming people....etc. But I don't. That's a subject for another thread.

A not unreasonable observation sir but Noo, that photo was taken just after my visit to the dentist!

I would say, "Nice stiff upper lip", but I can't see it.
But after your description of your visits to the dentist, I'm not surprised you take your sword with you!

I'm all for the smoking ban - should have happened years ago IMO.
