A thread for daisy chaining music recommendations

Posted by: chiba on 26 February 2007

I'm on the look out for some more music, so if you could help me out with an idea, I'd appreciate it.

My idea is this. I'll post an album that I like, and my reasoning. You post an album that you think I might like, based on the first one, and ideally why you think so. Then the next person posts a recommendation based on that one, and so on - a free for all, rock family tree sort of thing.

I'll start with an example just to get the ball roling, but then if you could help out a little, my music collection and I will be grateful!

Primal Scream - Give Out But Don't Give Up

The Primals doing psychadelic are a blast, but when they keep it simple and play the blues, they can really kick bottom. This album never seems to rate highly with their fans, but IMHO it should be viewed almost as a concept album - outside the main canon. Whatever, they don't forget their cast of thousands approach - throwing in soulful backing singers and swoopy horns, and electronics of course. The complexity can actually get a little tiring after a while, but I forgive them.

Reef - Replenish

Simpler than GOBDGU, and if anything with more impact. Bluesy riffs, Gary Stringer's singing, particularly on "Good Feeling" and "Repulsive"; clean, hard-hitting lead guitar. I always find myself cranking up the volume!

Next choice, anyone?

Great idea for a thread, but unfortunately I haven't got a clue what Primal Scream or Reef sound like, As munch suggests could you list a few bands you like and we may be able to respond.

However, you do say some of the music is psychedelic so why not listen to some the best psych albums ever made

SF Sorrow - The Pretty Things
Piper At The Gates of Dawn - The Pink Floyd
Sgt Pepper - The Beatles

You could try Tanz Der Lemmings by Amon Duul II.

However, I don't know the bands you mention - so I may be going astray with my recommendations.

Anything by the stones.Reason they did it first and they did it better and still do.POST some more bands or a list to work with. Its a good idear for a new thread.regards munch

Well just before both those albums came out I was in a true bluesy jam bag. If it didn't have extended riffs and Traffic/Blind Faith weavings then I wasn't interested (apart from Mahler, of course). Anyhow you may like this:

not sure what the consensus is on it these days but since an ex of mine retained my copy, I'll have to dig one out of the eBay trash can.
Enjoy that and you'll enjoy this too (sorry 'bout two recommendations Winker :

Ah, not sure how to play this; but if you like Mahler, you might like Beethoven's 9th Symphony
...

Or maybe Led Zeppelin; I'm a little confused.

That'll be dazed and confused surely?
