David Bowie

No-one ever seems to talk about David Bowie here. I used to be a huge fan and then when he turned his back on stadium gigs and did Tin Drum completely against the tide I repspected him even more. Probably the only mega star not to sell-out.
I still play Man Who Sold The World, Lodger, Low & Station To Station. I'm totally bored by the Ziggy thing. Not much known about anything later than mid 80's - did I miss anything?

My favourite Bowie album is discussed here..

Although I don't think he ever surpassed his early Deram years, most of his albums up to Scary Monsters have some high points - the only albums of his I really dislike are Young Americans and Pin-ups. Not keen on the live stuff: I saw a concert on BBC4 when he was Ziggy and wasn't impressed. I don't know his post-80s work at all.

The London Boys is my favourite David Bowie song.

Bowie at his best (IMHO)

Assuming you are talking post Scary Monsters and ignoring Tin Machine I'd look at:

Let's Dance - worth a listen unless you really hated the title track!

Outside - quasi industrial noise - Hallo Spaceboy is fantastic

Heathen - probably his best since Scary Monsters and possibly the one I would start with.

I've met him a couple of times. I have a mate who is a studio manager at shepperton studios, & I was there with him while 'Absolute beginners' was being filmed. Bowie waltzed straight into the workers canteen, sat down, had a cuppa, & said 'alright lads, how ya doing?'& just started chatting with us. What a nice bloke.
Second time was when I was doing some "security work", (ie hired monkey) for the Serious Moonlight tour. OK, the music wasn't his best, but he did wear some lovely suits!
I agree that musically, his best stuff comes from quite a while ago, but I do also like Heathen.

Another vote for Heathen, where he does a great Pixies cover.

I have some of his records but those that survived time are "Ashes to Ashes" and "Heroes".

I've not heard of Heathen. I'll have to investigate.

The Man Who Sold the World/Hunky Dory/Ziggy/Aladdin Sane/Diamond Dogs - one of the best sets of consecutive albums ever.

Try to find the bootleg Live in Santa Monica which is so superior to the official release I can't believe it. No idea why that should be the case but it is.
