My trip to Stallion's
Posted by: Steve Toy on 10 April 2002
I went to the Stallion abode on Monday afternoon and had a most enjoyable time but for the fact that he was teasing me with my favourite beers as well as an Italian fortified wine whose name escapes me when I had to drive home at 9:45 pm.
Needless to say, I left the place sober ( ) but incredibly well fed - Mrs Stallion is certainly an excellent cook!
As for the system, I can say that it has an awesome resolving power that would make many from the M*** camp green with envy - the killer bass, and the sheer detail on offer.
However, it wasn't really my cup of tea in every respect; Stallion has heard my system, and is therefore familiar with the type of sound that I like - warm and euphonic, whereas the presentation he prefers is more explicit to the point of trashing less-than-perfect recordings.
He did say a few weeks back that I may well prefer the Music Works Block and Leads over his "Amazing New Discovery" - the Block from Adventures in Hi-fi at Wigan now in use in his system.
I found the top end of his system to sound a little fierce to my own personal tastes, and I felt that imaging and tune were the first casualties of this with many recordings.
I did notice that the Supercap was positioned immediately beneath the 52, but I understand that regarding siting of equipment on the QS Reference racks, work is still in progress - and a spacer shelf between may help.
I am also certain that he knows exactly the type of sound he wants to hear and that this isn't a sonic flavour that I would go for personally - we are in agreement on that particular score.
I should certainly be interested in hearing the system again following the reorganisation of equipment on the stand, as well as an A/B demo of Music Works versus the block now in use.
Stallion's system is still a monster, and is one of the most dynamic I have ever heard. I would just like it to sound a little sweeter to my own tastes.
Regards,
Steve.

It would be great if this thread did not slip into
the direction I fear your post will take it in.

Worth the trip just for that in my view, that's one of my favourites.

Peter,
Fed up with all that 'piss poor' claret then, old chap?
Amarone is really good, but there is tons of other stuff left for Steve to sample next time he comes round.
You're on the invite list, if you're up for it next time you're over here.
Marco.
Yeah, that piss poor claret forced me to drink some cotes du rhone the other day, I've got a stock of decent '94 claret that has to be enjoyed before it turns to vinegar. Going to Firenze & siena in about two weeks, should be able to perk up the taste buds then.
Thanks for the invite, next time we're in that neck of the woods we'll look you up
Peter

A few deletions already then, hey?
Now, who has been a plank then?
Marco,
I look forward to my next trip chez toi, and this time I will bring the young lady I had to drive back to, and I shall bring a bottle or two with me for you to sample.
Sobriety is a very sad state of affairs to be in, in such otherwise delightful circumstances.
Regards,
Steve.

Anyway, looking forward to the next session. Mrs Stallion would like you to try some of her home-made linguini with clams followed by veal t-bone with garlic/rosemary in a white wine sauce next time, as long as you promise to leave the pattern on the plate
You may have to use pattern-less plates!

Steve.

What's your agenda here then, Rico?
Strange combination that, Marco - you're wearing a halo, yet oddly defensive.
I have no agenda, just unable to comprehend what went on as Dev's post is mentioned but not present.

It's been deleted, quite rightly, by the administrators for the tosh that it was.
Well I am sure you expect us all to take your word for that.

It doesn't take a genius to work out from what Simon said that Dev's post was not, shall we say, in the interests of polite discussion (to put it mildly). Therefore, having deduced this fact, it strikes me as odd why you would want to pursue it any further.
That would be tantamount to accepting hearsay evidence... just slightly to the left of "japanese whispers" - not a game I'm fond of. Nothing like reading for oneself. Until that time, I shal reserve (my own) judgement.
Now, get thee to that rock!

Rico,
Two of my posts one to Steven Toy and the other to Stallion were deleted by the administrators.
Both posts ridiculed Stallion.
I wrote them because I am still outraged by certain comments made by Stallion in the not too distant past.
It is probably better that the posts were deleted as the thread would have turned into a slagging match.
This is Naims forum I respect that. I have no wish to turn this into a Anti-Stallion forum, he's pretty good at doing this all by himself.
I will endeavour to be polite and cordial in the future - pretty much what I am like 99.9% of the time.
regards
Dev.

A CDX based system that sounds ‘warm and euphonic’? That is not what a CDX is all about Steven, if that’s the type of presentation you like, maybe you need to go the whole hog and swap the X for an Ikemi or some such mild mannered player.Mr Tibbs
Warm and euphonic? yes, but dull, lifeless and dynamically restrained with ill-defined bass? no.
The Ikemi? I went there and did that about two years ago - I prefered the naked CD3.5 to it.
You need to remember that the rest of my system is Densen and not Naim in the amp department, and my speakers are Rega.
I use Chord Anthem interconnects which are on the warm side also, and are very tuneful to boot.
I also use QS Ref. Bog Seats in conjunction with Music Works Block and Leads.
Mine is a "mongrel" system, but the synergy therein, you wouldn't believe!

Steve.

Dev,
With respect, you are like the proverbial dog with a bone.
It is time to give it up now, don't you think?
Stallion once laughed at one of Manning's toilet jokes. That does not make him a card-carrying BNP/NF member.
As for the sexist bit regarding women with large breasts and a brain, I ran this idea past my girlfriend...
I asked her if she would find it offensive to be refered to in this manner. She replied that it was nice to be appreciated in different ways.
I think it is time you took your belligerent PC hat off...
No more witch-hunts, please!
Regards,
Steve.

You seem to be missing the point. The different ways in which you and your girlfriend appreciate each other should be a private matter, not one for public conjecture based on mildly offensive generalisation.

Dear Steve,
Firstly congratulatons on finally pulling! It will certainly do wonders for your nerdy, anoraky, hifi habit.
Thanks for your advice on PC witch-hunts but I won't heed it. If I respected your opinion on this subject I might have, but I don't, so I won't.
I do not propose to add to this thread.
regards,
Dev

For the record, Dev is the most un-belligerent person I've ever encountered. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dev for his patient and well-mannered response - I now have a more accurate idea of what went in to this thread before I saw it.
I will note that I am disturbed insofar as almost every post stallion has directed at me has begun with "you're an intelligent guy" - I'm certainly not a psychologist, but suspect that this is either something to be concerned about, or, it is particularly patronising. I would ask him to dismount from his lofty horse - but then that would be somewhat oxymoronic.
I would also like to point out to stallion that while he as at pains to paint other's posts as "not in the interests of polite discussion", this is clearly a case of the pot and the kettle. Or the glass house dweller and stonings. I'm sure you get my drift - you're an intelligent guy, after all.
Indeed, it appears Steve is "in". More information than was required, really. I would recommend, Steve, that you quit eyeing Dev's bone, and leave it well alone. Continue the Greek studies though, it appears they suit.
So back to the matter at hand. You've a system that you like (great stuff, you're ahead of most folks!), and it's tuned to sound not much like a Naim system, and not much like music. stallion has a system that grates your nerves, and sounds not much like a naim system, (but he likes it so he's ahead of most folks too - 9 points!), but not much like music also.
Now that that's all neatly over, done-and-dusted, finito: Can we all retire now to an orderly slagging match in the Padded Cell where you both proceed to gang up, defend a corner against allcomers, and declare black is white, all girls are equal, and do-se-do in positions as you collectively alienate the forum populous at large?

James, my new GIRLfriend says noone familiar with the delights of Buckfast tonic wine or younger than Matthew Robinson (Mick's virtual but wayward son) should be posting on this forum. Either you are a complete middle class fraud listening to daddy's hifi or are 41 years old.Hummph!

Dev's a bit pissed off for some reason, and I am not going into any armchair psychobabble as to why.
The point being is that I don't think he's spoiling for a scrap in the Vuk fashion - he's not being a wind-up merchant or anything like that.He is obviously genuinely upset, and as I reckon this is based on a pure misunderstanding, I thought I'd stick me oar in...
I would genuinely like to get this bone of his sorted for all of our benefit.
If I chose to mention a little conversation with my girlfriend on this forum I did it with a view to doing some good (Alex).
Dev,
You and I can agree to disagree on one particular point.
As for you and Marco, I suggest one of you gives the other a call and sort it out.
Regards,
Steve.

I don't come on this forum to criticise other people's personal style.
I just agree or disagree with what they may say.
If you don't like reading something then don't read it, and certainly don't reply to it.
I've a good mind to resurrect the smilies just for you!

Steve.
