I visited my mate at the dealers today, and he let me take an XPS home to try, as I considered this would probably be the next upgrade I would make. Can anyone ofer any suggestions on warm-up period for the XPS. Straight from cold I noticed a slight improvement, but not 2+ grands worth, but as I sat there over the next half hour things did improve dramatically.
During discussion at the shop, I was told that the XPS would not make the CDX sound smoother in any way, and edginess in some recordings may become more noticeable, as the XPS reveals more of the CDX. Having listened to the CDX/XPS for a little while now, I would have to disagree with this, as I now feel I could listen to the system for longer periods without fatigue. Any opinions from CDX/XPS owners about this.

Oh, by the way, with the XPS it turns out that my cd's do actually have a substantial amount of bass recorded onto them after all !!

Do a search for XPS in articles written by Mick Parry. If I remember correctly, it took a couple of days before the whole thing clicked.

The XPS is an excellent upgrade.
The problem is that it takes at least 4 days to become half decent. The first couple of days are a total waste of space.
It really does transform the CDX, so be patient...it's well worth the wait.

Is that 4 days of playing time, or just plugged in?
Mine has had about 1 day of actual playing time but a week of being plugged in... however, already made quite a difference. CDX used to be blown away by my TT, now there's much less in it, just different. If there's more to come I can't wait!

Hi Ade,
I got my XPS on Friday. It was quite good from the start, but I suppose it depends a lot on the system whether you're happy from the beginning. Yesterday the sound improved dramatically, it was 'all there', things just clicked. So that's four days ... And I do think it reduces edginess.

I got my XPS shortly after getting my CDX, as I was not enjoying the music as much with the bare CDX as with the ole CD3.5/FlatCap. I think the XPS takes off the rough edges and makes the whole thing rock out with the band. I had a great day today listening to Eno/ Wonder Stuff/ Tweaker/ Charlatans/ Guns'n'Roses/ Lucinda Williams - I never wanted it to stop (working at home - tomorrow is Turkey Day).
Get one - then get a CDS II

I like to listen to stuff like Metallica, AC/DC and Tool (thanks for the Tool recommendation Matt!) through to the Eagles and Chris Rea. The trouble is I've often found rock music a little lacking in 'oomph' through my system, and although I had been initially impressed by the SBL's I bought a few months back, I was beginning to have second thoughts about them. I was also picking up on other's comments about them being bass-light, which I felt was the problem, and was considering whether I should consider changing them. It is clear to me now that the problem is more likely that they are very demanding of the signal fed to them. In the short time I've had the XPS it has already shown me what both the SBL's and the CDX are capable of, as I now have a much fuller sound as the frequency response at both ends of the scale has increased, and I can now actually physically feel the low notes coming from the SBL's, and after only one day it seems from your comments that there's more to come.
Cheers
Ade
