Dynavector HX1.2 upgrade question

Posted by: rocketeer on 21 January 2003

dear forum members

it is only 2 months ago when i upgraded from cdx/72/hi/140 to cdx/72/hi/250, which was a fantastic move. now, i'm being confronted with an exceptional s/h offer for a dynavector hx1.2 amp. it is only 4 years old and at 2220 Euros, about 1500 GBP. exceptional, since a new one is almost 3times this tag, as far as i could figure out.

fact is, i never heard a dynavector, and i do not have any occasion to do a demo at my own place or at a dealer here in switzerland. Only got some info on the HX1.2 here on the forum.
I probably could ditch my 250 easily for around 1000 GBP, since it is only 3 years old. So, the dynavector offer is very tempting. What would you do (with dynaudio contour 1.3MkII speakers)?

thanks for any opinion.

regards

dimitri,

If you search the forums on here, you should find the enough on the positives and negatives of the Dynavector. If that sways you in the direction of the Dynavector then it may be worth a punt. Pretty tough decision to make without ever hearing one though.

Go for it. Its a fantastic amp. I went from 32.5/SC/250 to 32.5/SC/HX1.2 without regret. At the price you're getting it you can always sell it on in the unlikely event that you don't like it. The only caveat is to ensure it actually works and hasn't been messed about with. Get the serial number and ring John Burns at Pear Audio to make sure its bona fide and not nicked.

PS Dynaudios like to be driven hard and the 1.2 will certainly do that for you.

If you search you'll find my report of my 250 vs 1.2 home dem. I stuck with the 250 but only because of the huge price differential - the 250 is v god considering its half the price. However, although they do things differently, my take is that the Dyn is the better amp overall and I would have little problems chosing it if were offered at an attractive price.

Steve

I read your report on the 250 and 1.2. Excellent and very informative. But it's still tough for me to decide, since it becomes evident from your and others's writings that i would not get that typical naim sound i am so in love with. On the other hand, i'm also in love with the dynaudios which would definitely approve the immense power of the 1.2 to a considerable degree. hm, maybe i go to bed early today, so i can sleep over it. will let you know what happened...

Ok, i've decided not to go for it. For those who may be interested, check it out here. They also offer a s/h L-100.
