CD 3.5 to CD5

Posted by: TomK on 17 October 2003

I'm giving serious consideration to upgrading my 3.5 to a CD5. I admit it's partly cosmetic as I'm really taken by the new look and want my system all to match but bottom line is, how does the CD5 compare with the 3.5? I know I need to listen myself but would appreciate some opinions.

CD 3.5 - fun, tuneful, great timing, but the musical presentation is almost caricature. Doesn't really image very well, imho.

CD5 - smoother, more relaxed, with a more focused image.

I prefer the 5 but the difference isn't really worth what it'll cost you to, er, sidegrade, unless you can get a s/h CD5.

Steve.

I concur with Dr. Toy. I'd think of this as a side-grade and not worth the money (for me). If I were in this position I'd be patient and await a cdx2. Wait about 6 months (they're out there now but not many around) and you'll be able to find one more easily on the second hand market. (where I spend my money...)

Yeah - the CD5 is a sidestep, not really an upgrade. Shame you are mainly after the looks, 'cos for around the same price you could pick up a used CDX, and that would really change things.

Totally agree the CD5 would only be a side step, totally not worth it.

Well each to their own I suppose.

A case of different not better. Night and day are very different, but one is not really better than the other.

The same applies to the CD3.5 versus CD5. Try either of the two players against a CDX or CDX2 and you'll hear exactly what I mean!

I've got to agree with most of the posts, and would like to say that "sidegrade" is a great word!.
