Well a further basic question from me I'm affraid. Is it correct that there should be 2 link plugs with a NAC82, 1 x 4pin and 1 x 5pin. Does the side extension only act as a cover for one of the sockets and not provide any pins?

You should go the the Naim UK website and under "products" download the 82 owners-manual.
The reason that there are two link-plugs is because the pre-amp can be used from just a power amp (140,180) or with (1) HI-CAP or 2 HI-CAP's or a SUPERCAP.
Once you check out the owners manual all will become clear.
Yes the extension is just a cover.
