Jason Bourne 3Blu-Ray discs set not so good?
Posted by: andrea on 26 December 2009
Hi I've just had this 3 BD set . . . I must confess it is not of great quality. I mean, it is very good, but not so "special" as one would imagine from BD.
It is me, my TV or PS3 set up, or it is really the discs?
Does any one can conferm/verify?
Thanks all
Kind regards
Andrea

A lot of disks coming out are defined as HiDef but they are HiDef versions of poor quality films.
I don't personally see the point.

Totally agree. Rubish in rubish out. The format can be brilliant but if you record crap funnily enough that is what you get out the other end and the trouble is as with hifi the better the replay system the worse it looks. When will the production companies ever learn?

I very much doubt if the picture quality on the Bourne films was intrinsically crap as it's obvious that a lot of thought, hard work and imagination went into creating the visual style and impact of the series, so the answer's above may not be quite right. Sometimes the mastering process is a bit shoddy, just like with vinyl and cd and I would expect it's either that or your equipment. The latter's probably less likely if you have other blu-rays that do look good though.
Of course it might just be that the visual style of the films doesn't lend itself to showing off the advantages of blu-ray. Perhaps it's a bit grainy and gritty. I can't remember as I watched them a while ago on dvd. This wouldn't make them crap or poor quality though. Nobody has to like them, but by hollywood standards they're very well made films.

I've got the films on both DVD and BluRay, and IMO the quality of the BluRay set is better than the DVDs, but as David points out they have indeed got a grainy quality, no doubt there for effect, which tends to give a bit of a low-quality feel.

I thank everyone for the explanations . . . I suspect tonym has it . . . all right then . . furthermore, the three tend to improve w/r to each other, say, third is clearly better than first and second, and second better than first . . .
anyway, BD Ratatouille beats them all , and by far . . . in all respect . . .
cheers

Sorry do you mean the bourne identity etc?
I found that a number of DVDs I have purchased have been very poor when they didn't need to be. And example Shawshank Redemption, I picked up a 'classics' series dvd of this film and its grainy and shitty as hell.
BUt its not like that in reality, I wonder if they compress or something.

Garyi,
Uncompressed standard def digital video from a home video camera takes up something stupid like a gigabyte a minute, so yes dvd is massively compressed and the quality of the mastering varies wildly.

Agree. The best looking Blu-ray thus far. Pure eye candy. And a great movie to boot.

Not watched Watchmen then?
Cartoons are so easy to make HD look good, its in films that real skill can be shown.

Defo not for anyone under 20 really, well 14 anyhow. Its pretty grotesque in places.
I like startrek but think they over done the reflective lights bit a little.

I find the Bourne films to look phenomenal on blu-ray. The third movie is certainly the equal of Star Trek with regard to video quality. The films simply have different aesthetics. Also, the PS3 (I use one myself) is merely an adequate blu-Ray player, not a great one.

I got "Zulu" on BD and the picture is astounding, so it can be done, even with old source material.

Naijeru I must revise my topic's title . . . in fact, I happened to get home just few days after a while away (no movies, no TVs, no screens whatsoever), to find my daughter (and boy friend . . aaaghhhh!!!!) watching Bourne 3 . . the quality of picture was astonishing . . . I've decided it has to be me . . my eyesight is not the same anymore . . . you know, getting younger everyday doesn't help . . .

I'm not an expert . . could you explain? Also, I've started a thread, named "Best sounding blu-ray player", could you possibly contribute there? Opinions about PS3 as BD player do differ a lot . . .
Many thanks
Andrea
