hotel/b&b/... in New York

Posted by: Uwe Supper on 21 May 2007

Hi there,
I suppose the question has been asked over and over again, but I couldn't find anything with the search function. Can anyone recommend from personal experience a decent hotel (reasonable prices, fairly central, etc.) or a kind of bed&breakfast? The lady has to go to the US in summer and would like to stay a little longer (5 days) and visit New York. Thanks for all your suggestions.
Regards
Uwe

I've stayed at the New Yorker hotel a couple of times. It's pretty central on Eighth and 34th(midtown) and reasonably priced. It's being renovated but this doesn't seem to be interefering too much (it didn't last time i visited).

I've stayed at the Wolcott on W21st, and that was very clean , nice sized rooms, and very reasonable (ie. cheap). No breakfast of course, but breakfast in NY is an adventure anyway. Great location to go either way; all walkable from there. Go west one block and turn left and you'll find a good Irish bar directly opposite Madison Square Gardens. Have a beer and think of all the gigs that have happened there over the years.

I've recently stayed at the Park Central Hotel. A couple of blocks south of Central Park (there's a coincidence!). Diagonally opposite the side of Carnegie Hall. The advantage of it, being that it's directly above 57th Street subway station which has 4 subway lines going through it. You can get anyway from just outside the front door without using taxis. $24 for a 7 day travel pass, good for the subways and buses - bargain.

Phil, Rasher, Ian,
thank you very much for your input, we checked all the places you mentioned, and apparently the lady will chose the Walcot.
Thanks again, regards,
Uwe

I had dinner and a few Guinni (is that plural for Guiness) in that bar while waiting for a train beck to DC once. Not bad at all....

Try the Belvedaire. Right next to the Subway, so easy to get around from.
