I, Samurai BBC tonight

Posted by: erik scothron on 14 February 2006

Did anyone see this TV prog tonight? I adore the samurai film genre and have seen loads. I have books on samurai and samurai swords which is an amazingly difficult subject to become an expert in and I practice Iaido which is the kata based non combative art of japanese sword drawing - it is meditative and gentle and not at all like the high velocity Kendo shown in the programme. What an honour to see the great sword maker at his art and enter into the temple of sword shops in Tokyo where even an inexpensive sword will set you back many thousands of pounds.

My favourite houses, actually built in the US are based on 16th japanese farm houses www.haikuhouses.comand I hope to build a similar house on my beach in the Philippines when I can and just swing in my hammock all day enjoying the view.

You're right to want to build your house somewhere warm, because they're f'ing freezing in winter, even with an irori!

I also did Iaido for some years. I gave it up not long after I came to Japan, as it was way too tedious and formal over here - very much an "old man's thing". Not at all what I expected after the deep enjoyment, sense of calm and stress relief that I got from it in the UK. Funny old world, eh? Roll Eyes

Hi Chiba,

What a pity you could not keep it up over there - why are you in Japan? My sensei was Vic Cooke - did you come across him in the UK?

Regards,

Erik

Why am I in Japan? Initially an interest in all things Japanese led me here, via a job with a Japanese company, then the same reason anyone's anywhere. Family, job, the usual stuff. I just started living here. I've heard of Vic Cooke, but for the life of me I can't remember my sensei's name! Embarassing, but it's been nearly 10 years... Confused
